Hair dye.

The last time I had my gray hair professionally dyed was probably seven or eight years ago. Since then, I’ve just used a little drugstore touch-up at home whenever a spot started to bother me.

The last time I dyed it was this past September. I was helping my daughter move, and I knew I’d be meeting her new roommates and friends.
And I couldn’t help thinking:

“If I look too old, that might be embarrassing for her…”

So I colored it.

But over the past few months, at least here in the States,
I’ve gotten pretty comfortable not hiding my grays.
It feels like a bright, cheerful kind of letting-go.

The only thing that still worries me a little is when I go back to Japan.

Because honestly, there are so few women with visible gray hair in Japan. It gives me a little reverse culture shock every time.

It’s not like people don’t go gray, right?
Or… do they all eat wakame every day?
I can’t do wakame. I really can’t. 😰

And the fashion—Japan is at least twenty times more stylish than the U.S.
Everyone is put together, wearing makeup, looking polished.
And I’m the complete opposite 💦

I’m almost always bare-faced, and I stand out enough already because I’m basically “the American one.” If my hair isn’t even black, I feel like I’ll look extra out of place. Like some kind of weirdo. 😣

But deep down, I already know the truth.

"I just want people to see me—and know me—as I am."

If I ever get the chance to meet someone from note in Japan,
I’d love to show up exactly as myself, without hiding anything.

And one more thing.
If I ever fall in love again…
That’s when I want someone to love me just as I am.
This is super important.

Sure, sometimes I’d love to wear a dress, slip on some heels, put on lipstick, and enjoy a little romantic evening at a restaurant.

But the real, real truth is—
Even with gray hair, even without makeup,
I still want to be his only “princess,” you know?

Is that dreaming too big?

Honestly, writing all this out is making me a little embarrassed.
So I’ll stop here for today.

Thank you for sticking with this heartfelt monologue
from an around-sixty lady just thinking out loud.
