今回はThe Notorious B.I.G.のSky’s the limitの和訳です。
レーベル会社社長のPuffが後年語るところによれば、稀代の天才ラッパーであるBiggieもReady to die リリース以後はスランプだったそうです。
ただ、このスランプは本人の技術面の衰えというよりは、成功を掴み暮らしが豊かになることでReady to die当時に持っていた怒りや苦しさをラップする事が嘘になってしまう事やお金を持つことでヒップホップを裏切る事になるのではないかという苦悩が原因だったそうです。
しかし、彼は成功して金を山ほど稼ぐ自分を肯定します。
稼いでいる、幸せである、それらに嘘をつかないというリアルさ。
そして、自分の今の生活を同じ境遇だった人々に掴んでほしいという想い。
これら二つが込められているのが晩年のBiggieの曲の特徴だと私は思います。
そして、今回取り上げる曲はこの特徴がよく出た曲でありまして、命を燃やして生きてきたThe Notorious B.I.G.ひいてはクリストファー・ウォレス(Christopher George Latore Wallace)という人が遺したメッセージを読み解いて参りましょう。
