โ The Benefits and Method of a One-Line Journaling
One-line journaling is a doodle that springs from a fleeting thought.
If you don't know what you like, please try this.
If you have any 'fuzziness,' 'discomfort,' or 'things that make your head feel clogged' inside you, take a pencil or a pen and write down just one line about it on the back of an old handout or anything similar, just to place your thoughts somewhere.
Something will come out. You will naturally find yourself thinking things like, 'So, what do I really think about this?', 'What does this mean?', or 'So, this is what it boils down to,' once you write it down.
Writing is a very convenient act that allows you to see inside your own head.
When I was in the lower grades of elementary school and started my one-line journaling
When I was a child, my head was a mess, but the adults around me didn't notice, and no one did anything about it.
Since I didn't have the words to express myself, I tried to see what I was thinking by writing down the foggy, fuzzy state of my mind all at once onto paper without thinking.
At first, I was surprised. What is this? Is this what I'm thinking? I wondered.
Even so, since I wrote it with my own hand, it must be my own thought. Not anyone else's.
That is how I accepted that fact. It was when I was in the lower grades of elementary school.
That diary where I wrote only one line is what I would call a 'one-line journaling' today. But it was just a 'scribble' woven by a pen I happened to be holding and paper I happened to have in front of me.
From then on, it became something I continued to do for a long time whenever my head felt fuzzy.
Placing what is in your head onto paper, just one line at a time
It is a way to make what you are thinking deep in your heart visible to your eyes.
As I continued, one line became two. I wrote next to the first line what I understood by saying to myself, 'If that's the case, then this is how it is.'
Writing clears up your head.
By doing so, you become able to think in that extra space.
If you keep doing this, you will be able to see what you are thinking right now and what the truth of the matter is. Since you aren't showing it to anyone, please write it down without any shame.
If something rough comes out
Sometimes, something rough or gritty comes out.
There were times I wanted to look away. I hated it and threw it away. But then, it started to bother me. I wondered what that gritty feeling was. So, I tried writing it down again.
When I wrote it a second time, the gritty feeling faded a little. But since it was the same words, I also felt a sense of acceptance.
Please be honest. Write the truth. If you were feeling hazy or troubled, put that haziness down on the paper along with everything else.
It is better not to ramble. Be brief. Use concise words. Make it easy for yourself to understand.
Write down things you thought you already understood in your head. When you write them down, they become definitive and look different.
"I like that person"
I see, I like that person. You will surely think that. After all, it is something you wrote down yourself, based on what was already in your own mind.
Even so, if you get stuck
If you continue this, there may be times when you get stuck at a crucial point. When that happens, that is the first time you should try consulting someone.
It could be a reliable friend, or an adult who seems to have the knowledge to answer your worries. By doing that, you already have "two or three choices" in your mind, so you will quickly arrive at an answer you feel is "the one." The sense of satisfaction will also be different.
If you do that before asking yourself, you will only receive an ambiguous response like "I wonder if that's true," but if you have already created several options within yourself, things often move much faster.
โ My Middle School Days
My middle school days, when I couldn't quite find what I liked.
When I was in middle school, I didn't know what I should be passionate about.
Whatever I did, it wouldn't last, and I spent my days doing things halfway.
So, what did I think?
"This time was just okay."
I would try the next thing and think,
"This was also just okay."
Whenever I had a chance to try something, I would do it and just move on to the next. That was fine. People talk about being a "three-day monk," but I quit in an instant.
Even so, if there is something you don't love but don't hate either, it might be good to try it out a little.
Gymnastics I did during my middle school days. The things I liked that remained from that time were figure skating, copying drawings, and calligraphy.
I was a gymnast in middle school. It was interesting enough, but I had a flaw where I would just abandon skills I was too timid to perform. I realized that even though I tried it, it wasn't for me.
I settled into just watching figure skating, which I thought was interesting.
I like to just gaze at it and think, "Ah, how beautiful."
Also, I liked calligraphy and copying art. I didn't really do these because I intended to; it was more like, "I did it instinctively and found I was good at it."
I realized this was because the act of "placing something on paper" was similar to a one-line journaling.
โ I realized I liked analysis at 59. It's okay if you don't reach the answer right away.
As someone who loves analysis, I study SEO.
While writing, I realized that I like analysis.
I am trying to study "White Hat SEO," which is a "means of delivering information to people who are searching."
I'm not good at sports, so I don't understand sportsmanship. That's why I wanted to cultivate within myself the ultimate form of sportsmanship: "a fair and square match where both sides are at their best."
Conversely, even though I like analysis, I might not be suited for it because I don't understand that part. But I will do it anyway.
And I realized that at 59 years old.
Perhaps I took a grand detour. But because of everything that happened until now, I am here today having become someone who "likes analysis," and perhaps it was the result of analyzing myself that I realized I "like analysis."
Wasted time is not wasted.
Everything up until now has not been a waste at all. I liked old movies, but that was it. I liked manga, but I couldn't write stories. I liked art, but I never learned it properly and just enjoyed looking at designs. Even so, when I have AI create my top image for note, I can say, "Make it like this."
Like, "This time, please make the moon from Jules Verne's movie 'A Trip to the Moon' into a sun."
As for writing, I hated studying, but because I read various people's work and enjoyed it, the prototype of the "reverse-ku shape" I saw somewhere remained in my head, and I wanted to try it out.
Things I enjoyed in my own way during middle school, even while thinking, "Is this right?" or "It's not quite right," are now taking shape like this.
You could say that thanks to taking the long way around, I am living a rich life.
I didn't realize it at the time, but it's interesting that it's proving useful now.
To those currently spending their student days
ใPlease keep pressing the button. And if you are using note, try writing to find the center of yourself.
ใIf you cannot find what you 'like,' try listing what you 'don't like,' and by doing things other than those, you might just find what you 'like.'
ใIt is rare for people in middle or high school to have something they want to do.
ใUnless you have extraordinary talent or are exceptionally precocious, I think it is inevitable that someone like me, who can call themselves an ordinary person, wouldn't find what they like so early on.
ใIt can't be helped. We weren't geniuses, after all.
ใAnd, although I felt like I could see the end at 59 years old, it seems that isn't the case at all. I didn't know that.
ใMy life up until now has had more than its fair share of misfortune, but as I write this today, I am actually quite happy.
