Japanese Version and English Version"

Ordinary for Oneself = One’s Own Sense of Justice

Ella and Yoru — A Novel I Am Reading | Factorization of the Heart

In English

Ordinary for Oneself = One’s Own Sense of Justice

Words like battle, weapon, sword, blade, or killing inevitably carry a rough, unsettling texture. Yet when people fight “for justice,” both sides believe that their own justice is the correct one.

Humans tend to call themselves “ordinary.”

“That seems normal, right.”

But this “ordinary” is often mistaken for a shared understanding. In reality, ordinary is never universal; it differs from person to person.

What feels “ordinary” to someone becomes their source of comfort, and that comfort becomes their sense of justice.

Different Standards of “Cute”

What one person calls cute may be an idol from the Sakurazaka or Nogizaka groups, while for me, cute might be the figure skater Kaori Sakamoto. Each insists that their own sense of “cute” is ordinary.

To me, the faces of those idols look almost the same, and I cannot tell who is who. Even if someone says, “This girl,” once the scene changes, I no longer know which one they meant.

But that does not mean my sense of cute is a shared standard either. The criteria for cute exist only inside each person.

There are countless versions of “ordinary.” They differ from person to person. Yet people feel safe when they believe that their own ordinary is the shared ordinary. Without that sense of safety, daily life becomes difficult.

And so, one’s ordinary = one’s comfort = one’s sense of justice.

Justice That Creates a Victim

The bishop tries to take Ella away from Yoru, wanting to elevate her to the status of an apostle. He says, “All we need is for the Apostle to be here.” For him and his followers, their justice means keeping Ella there even if it costs her consciousness.

Yoru feels a strong sense of moral discomfort toward a method that ignores Ella’s own will.

That is the bishop’s justice — his version of ordinary — but it is a justice that creates a victim.

If someone is harmed by that justice, then it is not a justice that should be protected. I feel the same way Yoru does.

Learning to Protect Oneself

Yoru begins to feel uneasy about being protected all the time by Ella and Oto, who fight with their swords. She chooses to learn how to protect herself.

If she wishes to stand as an equal partner to her companion, this choice makes perfect sense.

Reading this, I thought of Japan and a certain neighboring country. Just as I want Japan to be able to protect itself, Yoru wants to be able to defend her own life.

If a country relies entirely on another for protection, it cannot speak its own mind. The goal is not to fight, but to protect one’s own country while respecting others.

In the same way, Yoru can take a stance of protecting herself while still respecting Ella.

And when something is wrong, she can say “No, this is not acceptable.” That stance feels like it will lead to a better outcome.

I find myself wanting to support Yoru.

Reading New Chapters Each Day

I have been reading one chapter a day, but the story is updated daily. If I continue at this pace, I realized that I will never reach the point where I can read the “newly posted” chapter each day.

So from today, I will read two chapters at a time. I hope that soon I will be able to enjoy each day’s new chapter as it is released.

A story in which the bishop says, “All we need is for the Apostle to be there.”

A story in which Yoru, in battles fought with the swords of Ella and their other traveling companion Oto, feels frustrated about being protected all the time, and chooses to become able to protect herself.
