I listened to the doctor's explanation alongside Naoki.
The day before we were to hear the doctor's report, Naoki, being a coward, started badmouthing the doctor instead of saying he didn't want to hear it. He insisted like a child, saying, "I don't trust him, so I'm not listening."
When I asked if he wanted me to hold his hand, he said no. He said he wouldn't go, he absolutely wouldn't go to the doctor to hear it. That's what he said.
But after throwing a tantrum for a while, he washed his face, brushed his teeth, shaved his beard, and said,
"I look terrible, and that's embarrassing."
With that, he groomed himself. When I jokingly asked how old he was this year, he replied with complete seriousness,
"56 years old,"
stating his actual age.
The doctor calmly explained the current situation and the future treatment plan, but Naoki, who wanted to know if he would be 100% cured or not, got angry and left in the middle, so Asami ended up hearing the rest.
When I returned to the hospital room, Naoki was sitting on the bed in the private room with his back to the entrance. His back, silhouetted against the backlight, looked so helpless and anxious that I quietly approached, hugged him from behind, and gave him a small kiss on the cheek.
Naoki, listless, just sat there, saying nothing and giving no response.
Naoki had a slightly troublesome habit. When he became anxious, he would reject people to the point where there was no way to reach him.
From the day he knew there would be a doctor's explanation, the rejection increased. Naoki spent the whole day playing Pokémon GO, and when he was playing, he would continue for an hour or two, stopping all conversation. I couldn't say anything, so I just watched over him.
Just when I thought that, he would fall asleep while I went to change the water for the flowers, and then he would sleep for a long time again.
So, I tried as much as possible to gather topics that would interest Naoki and talk to him, but it was counterproductive. Instead, it made him say things like, "You don't have to tell me every little thing."
Therefore, until the day radiation therapy began, I tried to prepare about two of Naoki's favorite things every day to keep his interest directed toward me.
Sometimes he would thank me, and other times he would just silently accept and eat them. It depended on his mood.
He said, "I heard I won't be able to eat food very well once radiation therapy starts, so I'll eat my favorites while I can." For a while, whenever I went to see him, he would look forward to it, asking, "What's the snack for today?"
That day, when Naoki talked to the doctor and then just sat there without saying anything, he said only one thing:
"Thank you."
He was not a person who expressed gratitude often, so for a moment, I didn't know what he was thanking me for.
Was it for hugging and kissing him? No, that wasn't it. Naoki was giving me the highest praise, thanking me for listening with him even though he was terrified to hear it.
It might have been the words of a man who realized that if he didn't say it now, he might never have the chance again.
When I returned to my parents' house, laid out my futon in the guest room, and turned off the lights, I realized that. For the first time, I thought, I'm afraid of tomorrow coming. I wondered if Naoki would be gone forever tomorrow, if he would disappear from within my reach.
I think there was no need to be so afraid, as radiation therapy is a series of treatments to get better, but seeing Naoki vomiting looked so painful and agonizing that I could no longer remain calm.
