【新曲公開】光の粒子が導いたシンクロニシティ。第3弾リリース『Dance of Photons』制作裏話

本日、バンドとして第3弾のリリースとなる新曲『Dance of Photons』のリリックビデオを公開しました。 1stアルバム『Iridescence』の2曲目にも収録されるこの楽曲について、今回はお話しさせてください。

『Iridescence』に収録される曲の多くは、VocalのEikoがMELONARRATEに加入する前に作られた曲です。彼女がそれらデモに歌詞を与え、命を吹き込んだ、いわばEikoによって「蘇生」させられた曲たちと言えます。 しかし、この『Dance of Photons』は、彼女の加入後に明確にEikoの声をイメージして書き下ろした楽曲です。

私が曲を作る時、常に意識の根底にあるのは何らかの「景色」や「情景」です。 具体的な声を持たないまま暗闇を手探りするのとは違い、彼女の持つ透明で清涼感のあるハイトーンや、憂いを含んだ深みのある響きという「明確な声」を道標にすることで、私の頭の中に浮かぶ景色の解像度は何倍にも跳ね上がります。 結果として、『Dance of Photons』ではEikoの抜けるようなハイトーンを手がかりにして、アコースティックギターのイントロから、Verse、サビ、大サビへと、メロディーがするすると舞い降りてきて、瞬く間に曲の骨格が出来上がりました。

実は当初、この曲はギターソロのない3分ほどの短い楽曲でした。しかし、アルバム全体のバランスやこの曲の立ち位置を考慮し、後からソロパートを追加することにしたのですが、この選択が吉と出ました。 ここで廣田が弾いてくれたソロは、単なる間奏ではありません。真っ直ぐに飛ぶ光の粒子たちが一点に集結し、最後のフレーズで一気に弾けてホワイトアウトする――そんな光景を、見事に音で具現化してくれたのです。これにより、楽曲に空間的な広がりが生まれました。

そして、この曲にはもう一つ「魔法」がかかっていました。実はEikoに作詞を依頼する数日前、私は偶然立ち寄った本屋で『Dance of Photons』というタイトルの書籍を目にしていたのです。邦題はもっと世俗的でしたが、内容は一般向けの量子力学の解説書です。その内容以上に、「光の粒子が四方八方に舞い散る」というイメージを喚起するその美しい英語タイトルが、私の心に深く引っかかっていました。そのすぐ後、作詞を依頼したEikoから送られてきたデモの歌詞を見て、私は思わず息を呑みました。

数日前に本屋で偶然見かけた『Dance of Photons』という本のタイトルを、完璧に象徴するような一節。これには大変驚かされました。 このシンクロニシティを前に、迷う理由はありませんでした。あの美しい本のタイトルを、そのままこの曲の名前に冠することにしたのです。

感情の窺えない誰かの表情、目の前をさっと吹き抜ける一陣の風、夜のネオンを反射する運河の水面、夏の雨上がりのアスファルトの匂い——。 普通に生活していると何も気づかずに通り過ぎてしまうような事象の奥には、量子力学の光の粒子の動きのように、「見えない動き」や「共鳴」が確かに存在している。その刹那を生きる、美しく切ない人生への賛歌。それが、私のこの詞に対する解釈です。作詞したEikoの視点はまた違うかもしれませんが。

Eikoの歌詞にせよ、廣田のギターソロにせよ、私から細かな要求をしたわけでもないのに、曲の持つ原風景をメンバーがそれぞれの解釈で具現化し、新しい世界を創り上げてくれるのは、バンドの持つ最大の醍醐味だと思います。

また、鍵盤アレンジについてはRiddle of Chimaeraのkiyuruteさんに依頼しました。 彼にMELONARRATEの楽曲アレンジをお願いするのはこの曲で2曲目なのですが、今回も原曲の世界観をさらなる高みへと導いてくれる素晴らしいアレンジを施してくれました。光の粒に象徴されるこの曲のキーワードが一層輝きを増したと同時に、多幸感の裏にある切なさのような感情にもスポットが当たり、楽曲の深みを与えてくれました。

ざわめく未来へ立ち向かう熱量と、導く光の祈り。 第3弾リリースとしてお届けする『Dance of Photons』の圧倒的な高揚感を、リリックビデオの映像とともに皆様にも感じていただけると嬉しいです。

[Lyric Video Release] A Synchronicity Guided by Particles of Light: Behind the Scenes of the 3rd Release "Dance of Photons"

Today, we released the music video for our new song "Dance of Photons," marking our third release as a band. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about this track, which will also be featured as the second song on our 1st album, Iridescence.

Many of tracks included in Iridescence are songs that were written before our vocalist, Eiko, joined MELONARRATE. You could say they are tracks that Eiko "resuscitated"—she breathed life into those demos by giving them lyrics. However, this song, "Dance of Photons," is different. It is a track I wrote specifically with Eiko's voice in mind after she joined the band.

When I compose, there is always some kind of "scenery" or "scene" at the root of my consciousness. Unlike groping in the dark without a specific voice, using her "distinct voice"—with its transparent, refreshing high tones and its deep, sorrow-tinged resonance—as a guide multiplies the resolution of the scenery that floats into my mind. As a result, in "Dance of Photons," using her piercing high tones as a clue, the melody fluttered down so smoothly from the acoustic guitar intro, through the verse, chorus, and final chorus, that the skeleton of the song was formed in the blink of an eye.

Actually, at first, this was a relatively short song of just over three minutes with no guitar solo. But considering the overall balance of the album and the positioning of this track, I decided to add a solo part later on, and this choice paid off beautifully. The solo played by Hirota here is not just a simple interlude. Particles of light flying straight ahead converge at a single point, and in the final phrase, they burst open all at once into a whiteout—he magnificently materialized such a scene through sound. This gave the song an infinite sense of spatial expansion.

Then, there was another kind of "magic" at work in this song. Actually, just a few days before I asked Eiko to write the lyrics, I happened to drop by a bookstore and spotted a book titled Dance of Photons. The Japanese title was much more mundane, but the book was essentially a popular science guide to quantum mechanics. More than the content itself, it was that beautiful English title—evoking an image of light particles scattering in all directions—that lingered deeply in my mind. Shortly after, when I read the demo lyrics Eiko sent back, I was left completely breathless.

A passage that seemed to perfectly symbolize the title of the book, Dance of Photons, which I had happened to see at a bookstore just days before. I was deeply astonished by this. Faced with this synchronicity, there was no reason to hesitate. I decided to crown this song with the exact title of that beautiful book.

The unreadable expression of someone passing by, a sudden gust of wind sweeping right before my eyes, the surface of a canal reflecting the neon lights of the night, the scent of asphalt after a summer rain—. Deep within the phenomena we would normally overlook and pass by without noticing in our daily lives, there certainly exist "invisible movements" and "resonances"—much like the movement of photons in quantum mechanics—that can stir the human heart. An anthem for a beautiful yet poignant life, lived in those fleeting moments. That is my interpretation of these lyrics. Though, Eiko, who wrote them, might have a completely different perspective.

Whether it's Eiko's lyrics or Hirota's guitar solo, the fact that the members materialize the original landscapes of the song through their own interpretations without me making any detailed demands is, I believe, the greatest thrill of being in a band.

Also, I requested kiyurute of Riddle of Chimaera for the keyboard arrangement. This is the second time I have asked him to arrange a MELONARRATE song, and just like the first time, he provided a wonderful arrangement that elevates the original world of the song to even greater heights. I believe the keyword of this song, symbolized by the particles of light, shines even brighter, while the emotion resembling sorrow hidden behind the euphoria is also brought to light, adding more depth to the track.

The heat to face a stirring future, and a prayer of guiding light. I would be delighted if you could feel the overwhelming euphoria of our third release, "Dance of Photons," along with the visuals of the music video.
