Self love and Selef understanding

Self-Love vs. Self-Understanding

I’ve always wanted to keep my heart in a clean, pure and peaceful state.

When my mind and heart feels clear, the world looks beautiful.

As those days became more frequent this past few months, my life itself became richer.

But the truth is, I’ve always been a noisy-minded person.
Ever since I was a child, my thoughts rarely stayed quiet.

Did I say the wrong thing?
Was that okay?
What does this person think of me?
What if they don’t like me?
What’s going to happen next?

I call that restless feeling born from anxiety
“mental noise.”

For a long time, that noise was always there and I made things more complicated than they needed to be.

I got hurt by my own assumptions.

I created suffering for myself.

But these days, I have a fairly good relationship with that noise.

The reason is simple: I’ve spent years learning how to face myself.

When I notice mental noise now, I no longer see it as something bad.

Instead, I see it as a sign.

This signal telling me, “You’re overlooking something.”

It’s like the entrance to the next stage of growth.

Sometimes it even feels like the sound of a bright bell calling for my attention.

Surprisingly, many people don’t actually know what they truly want.

I didn’t either.

And even now, I sometimes realize halfway through a journey,

“Oh. So this is what I really wanted.”

In my previous essay, I wrote that I believe self-understanding is more important than self-love.

Because without self-understanding,
self-love cannot truly exist.

The process is about finding what you genuinely want, while slowly making your way through the noise.

You want to get married.
You want money.
You want a house.

There’s nothing wrong with any of those things.

But what matters is the reason behind them.

Why do you want to get married?
Why do you want money?
Why do you love that person?

If you keep asking, you eventually arrive at a deeper truth.

To understand yourself is not simply to know your strengths.

It’s to face the parts of yourself you would rather avoid.

When do you become anxious?
What bad habits do you have?
What kinds of negativity disturb you easily?
What kind of bad people do you fall in love with?
Why do you expect certain things from others?

Self-understanding means observing all of those things.

Sometimes it feels as if old wounds and old traumas are hurting you all over again.

But the moment you begin to understand them, you also begin to become free.

Little by little, your heart grows lighter.

I believe self-understanding changes lives more than self-love does.

Before learning to love yourself,  learn to know yourself.

And perhaps, the accumulation of that understanding is what eventually becomes self-love.
