If everything is truly “your own responsibility,” why would you need to tell someone else that?
🚨 This is a warning about “self-understanding.”
To begin with
It’s something about the words themselves — or maybe the relationship, or the structure…
I want you to look carefully.
Let’s say Person A tells Person B: “Everything is your own responsibility.”
In that case — what is actually happening to the word “responsibility”?
Let’s unpack this a little.
On Personal Responsibility
First, I want to clarify the context in which this kind of language tends to appear.
To cut to the point: the word “personal responsibility” only appears within frameworks built on desire-fulfillment — success philosophy, self-help, spirituality, coaching, dating advice, parenting, and so on.
It becomes clearer if you swap it out for related terms.
Words like: the subconscious, vibration, mindset, appearance, authenticity.
Let me restate it one more time.
When it comes to achieving a particular desire, whether it happens or not — that’s entirely your responsibility.
Now here’s what matters.
Does the word “personal responsibility” appear in situations where desire-fulfillment isn’t involved?
Take the courtroom, for instance. What would happen if legal proceedings were conducted entirely on the logic of personal responsibility?
Or politics. Could a country actually function on “personal responsibility” alone?
And what about the natural world — does it operate purely on personal responsibility?
And what about yourself?
There are certainly areas where it applies — at least to some degree.
Particularly when desire-fulfillment is involved.
But what about your heartbeat, or the breath moving through your lungs?
Are the basic functions of life your personal responsibility?
And then there are others.
If everything is personal responsibility, how are we supposed to relate to other people?
There’s even a popular saying: “You can’t change the past or other people. You can only change yourself and the future.”
So then — going back to the opening example — what exactly is Person A doing when they tell Person B, “Everything is your responsibility”?
Self-Understanding and Personal Responsibility
There’s actually a misunderstanding about self-understanding at work here.
It’s a simple point.
“When you put desire-fulfillment first, what happens to your self-understanding?”
Let me put it in simpler terms.
“I’m hungry.”
At that moment, what kind of self-understanding takes place?
Most people, the moment they feel hungry, immediately think: “I want to eat something.”
And so, the assumption becomes: figuring out what you want to eat — that’s self-understanding.
I’m not saying that understanding why you’re hungry is the “true” self-understanding.
After all, both “I’m hungry” and “I want to eat something” can be real.
If that’s the case, then what is it about ourselves that we’re actually trying to understand?
Might it be worth pausing — and looking at that?
That’s all I’m offering here.
The Meaning of Reconsidering Self-Understanding
When it comes to “I’m hungry” and “I want something to eat” — how much of that, and which part of it, counts as self-understanding?
Let me connect this to a different story.
X’s child Y falls at the park and scrapes their knee.
Y is crying, “It hurts.”
この時。
At that moment.
X says to Y: “Pain, pain, fly away.”
In that moment — did X truly understand Y?
That’s the point.
“I’m hungry.” “I want something to eat.”
“It hurts.” “Pain, pain, fly away.”
I want you to place the story of self-understanding alongside the story of understanding others.
そして。
And then.
When a child falls — would you say to them, “Everything is your own responsibility”?
And if you did, what would that say about how you understand yourself?
And about how you understand others?
I hope you’ll look at that carefully.
