よっぽどつまらないもしくは疲れているときでない限り、１秒たりとも飽きることない方法で今は気に入って数年続けている。

ネタバレなしの感想

今後も映画レビューを続けたいので、ほぼネタバレなしで、書く方法として…
以前XがTwitterと呼ばれていた頃。わたしが大学時代に300本ほど書いたレビューの方法「140字であらすじ半分、感想半分」で書いてみたいと思う。

　誕生日を迎えたエリザベス。自分と同じように歳を重ねたはずのビジネスパートナーとの関係性に悩むも、パワーバランスから意見を言えずにいた。

映画の感想の前に少し私自身の話

「可愛さだけで過ごせるのは、もう終わりが来るのよ。」
30代のわたしでさえ最近3人くらいから、遠回しでも直接的でも言われた。

• 結婚は30代前半までにしておきなさい。

• この先、仕事であからさまに異性から当たりがきつくなる。今のままの態度でいいわけ？

• 女性の生殖機能は時間的限りがある…

そんなことをわたしの為を思ってか、解説してくれるお姉様方、お兄様方がいる。主観だけ自分の経験だけ、限られた知識・価値観で話すなよ。と、正直思っていたわたしにストレートに刺さったのがこのサブスタンスだった。

まだ映画を観ていないのなら注意事項

予備知識を入れていないため、そもそもこの映画がどんなジャンル〈ヒューマン、ラブストーリー、ホラーなどでよく括られてるカテゴリー〉に分類されているのか分からない。

どんな世代、どんな性別の人にだっておすすめしたい映画ではあるが、めちゃくちゃリアルな医療描写が苦手な人は…
目をつぶりながら観るか、慎重に観るのを検討したほうが良いかもしれない。
私は採血のときだって、針が血管のどこを通るのか観察できるくらいなので特に問題はなかった。(局部麻酔の手術の機会があれば…叶うなら自分の体の中をみてみたいくらいの好奇心がある)

映画を観ての感想(観終わって翌々日時点)

エリザベスはかつて一世を風靡したトレーニングTVショーに、今も出演している。
そんな誕生日を迎える彼女が記念すべき日に運転中、交通事故に遭う。
かなり大きな事故で車が大破する様子がアーティスティックかつ、かっこよく描写される。
ここで【シックスセンス】的なオチで、彼女は死んでいると仮説して映画を、観進める事もできるだろう。
ただそのような匂わせの雰囲気は一切ないように感じた。それが演出で意図的なのかは分からない。

シャイニング

ホラー映画といえば【シャイニング】が代表作のように言われたりもするが…
わたしは【シャイニング】をホラー映画と思ったことはなく〈人間の内面を捉えた映画〉として続編のドクタースリープ含め大好きな作品だ。
そんなシャイニングのオマージュとも言える描写がいくつかあった。

完全に一致といかないまでも、色のトーンや幾何学模様。廊下の独特な静けさ漂う雰囲気はシャイニングと酷似していた。

また後半に行くにつれ血しぶき等の描写が多く出てくるが、シャイニングでも特徴的だったエレベーターの描写に近いシーンもあった

さらに【シャイニング】のホラー的要素といえば、バスルームの老婆だ。
〈【シャイニング】に出てくる老婆の作り方〉と言うレシピ本があれば、【サブスタンス】のストーリーそのままだろうと言うくらい見た目が酷似している。
本当に【サブスタンス】がスピンオフ的に、【シャイニング】の老婆を描いているとしたら…
【シャイニング】の味方まで変えてしまう強烈な作品だ。

【シャイニング】に対するリスペクトなのか、同様に人間の内面を描こうとした結果の類似なのか意図か…不明だか、この記事を書き終えたらリサーチしてみたい。

エリザベスとスーの比較

〈成長と退化〉がテーマのように扱われるこの映画の中で、特に目が離せない描写がいくつかあった。

エリザベスはTVショーの中で分厚いダンス用のストッキングを履いているのに対し、スーは生脚かつカメラアングルもショーツラインを際どく攻めていた。
また振り付けも、トレーニングプログラムというよりはアカデミー賞受賞に輝いた【アノーラ】のような異性の性的欲求を煽るようなものが多かった。

自分の若さと美貌と外見だけを突き詰めて、価値を見いだしたスー。
結果的に美人は笑っていないと。と、かつて自分を切り捨てた同僚に呪いの言葉をかけられるまでになる。

この同僚もまた成長と退化のあらわれで、年相応にかっこよく紳士的にだって年齢を重ねられたはずなのに…
お金の使い方も、身なりマナーも身に着けず幼稚園児がそのまま歳を重ねたような描写が多かった。

異性と一緒に食事をしたら、その人の全てがわかる。と話していた、高校時代の恩師を思い出した🦐

また象徴的だったのが服装だ。
年齢を重ねると体温調節ができなくなると言うが、エリザベスは始めから道行く人が、夏仕様の恰好なのに対し
アメリカの卵の黄身のような特徴的なコートを着ている。

そして映画が進むにつれ、さらに厚着がましていくのは心理状態も反映され面白かった。
エリザベスに対してスーは、身体のラインが出る服か薄着だ。

卵と鶏🍳🐔

さらに特徴的だったのがたまごと鶏だった。
映画の冒頭から早速の卵。ここで直感的にこれはセンスのいい映画かもと思えた。
背景色のチョイスとテキストの入れ方が完全に私好みだった。

〈卵が先か鶏が先か〉パラドックスを示す文章だが、この映画は〈エリザベスが先かスーが先か〉。
もはや私にはわからなかった。私に投げかけられた文章最初の言葉たちが、私に影響を与えていることは確かだ。

比喩的な鶏以外に七面鳥かもしれないが、実際に鶏肉が登場する。
冷蔵庫にハウスキーパーが用意したのか、買ってきたのか分からない食材。
無惨にエリザベスによって食べ散らかされる事後のシーンは、同僚との食事シーンを思い出させる。

また鶏？七面鳥？料理のシーンも痛烈。詰め物をするシーンとスーのシーンの重ね具合が言いたいことを映像のみで表現していて、強烈に焼き付いている。

食事

食事繋がりで言うと、冒頭のハンバーガーとケチャップのシーンとラストシーンは確実に意図的。
またラストのエリザベスが床の上から眺めていたアングルが、映画の合間に何度も流れたヤシの木？の、したからのアングルシーンへと繋がることもわかる。

大学時代、映画の授業を取っていたがその何回目かの講義で【スーパーサイズミー】と言う映画が扱われた。

3食一カ月毎食ファストフードを食べ続けると人間どうなるのか？と言う映画だ。日焼けや喫煙と一緒で、アメリカの肥満や老化の原因を身体をはって描いていた映画だった。

鶏肉の養鶏場では遺伝子操作や、過度な(フォアグラがいい例だが)栄養投下が行われている。
そんな実情を卵と鶏でこの映画を表現しているようにも思えた。

主演女優デミ・ムーア

またこの映画に出演を決めた、女優自身もすごい。

エリザベスを演じた女優が、ゴーストの彼女だとはまるで気が付かなかった。
映画のサブスタンスを今日観に行くと話したところ「あぁ。デミ・ムーアのね。気になっている。」と言われても女優の名前と顔が一致していない私は終始「？？？」で、「ゴーストの」と言われて初めて「あぁっ！」となったものの【サブスタンス】のポスターの彼女と【ゴースト】の彼女はまるで一致しなかった。
しかし映画をみたあとでは【ゴースト】くらいしか彼女の作品を知らない私からしたらあまりにピッタリなキャスティングで少しデミ・ムーアが気の毒なほどだ。

生まれるということ

この文章の最初の方で生殖機能について、少し書いた。
