子供の頃の直島は昭和を描いた映画のような、まさにそ んなイメージ。当時は長家に住んでいて、銭湯が街の中心 にあったから、毎日そこに集まってた。子供が大勢で騒ぐか ら、風呂というかもはやプールみたいやったね。今の直島は 国内外からいろんな人が集まるすごく刺激的な場所。はじ めは美術館で働きに都会から来る人って、近寄りがたいん かなって思っとったけど、話してみると素朴でかわいらしい 人が多いしな。そうやって職場以外の関係が繋がるように なったのは、昔にはなかった今ならではの楽しさやね。 いつの時代も直島はおれにとって「中心」の場所やし、 ここで出会って、今は島から出て行った仲間たちにとっても、 心穏やかでいられる「第三の場所」であったら嬉しいな。

When I was a child, Naoshima had a nostalgic Showa-era image of a place where everyone would gather in the public bathhouse in the evening. Today, Naoshima is a place where people from all over the world gather, and it's very exciting, also fun to be able to connect with people outside of the workplace. Naoshima will always be the “center” of my life, I would be happy if this is a “third place” where for my friends who met here and have left the island.
