思い出のボストン旅行｜バークリー音楽院を目指した20歳の頃 / Boston Memories｜Visiting Berklee in My 20s

先日訪れたボストン旅行の動画です。バークリー音楽院周辺を歩きながら、30数年前を思い出していました。

当時はバークリーに憧れて、下見のつもりで渡米。まだ携帯電話もなく、行き先の住所を紙に書いてポケットに入れ、片言の英語であちこちに道を尋ねながら、ロサンゼルスから始まり国内線を自分で取って乗れないことも何度かありました。それでもなんとかボストンにたどり着いた、20歳の頃の思い出です。

昔はこの通り沿いに公衆電話がたくさんあって、25セント硬貨をたくさん用意して日本に国際電話をかけたものです。今は街中に無人のレンタル電動自転車が設置され、道路も自転車専用レーンがしっかり整備されていて、時代の変化を感じました。

This is a video from my recent trip to Boston, walking around the area near Berklee College of Music and remembering my time there over 30 years ago.

Back then, I dreamed of going to Berklee and visited as a kind of scouting trip. There were no mobile phones, so I wrote the address on a piece of paper and kept it in my pocket, asking for directions in broken English as I traveled. Starting from Los Angeles, I had to book domestic flights myself and sometimes missed them, but I eventually made it to Boston at age 20.

I remember there used to be public payphones along these streets where I'd load up on 25-cent coins to call Japan. Now the city has unmanned rental electric bikes everywhere, with well-marked dedicated bike lanes—a sign of how times have changed.
