English translation is available at the bottom of this page!

High Praise from the International Community! Capturing the Soundscape of Mt. Kurohime in Nagano with a DIY 2nd-Order Ambisonic Microphone

On June 7, 2026, I went on a field recording session in the forests of Mt. Kurohime in Nagano Prefecture, bringing along my DIY 2nd-order Ambisonic microphone (a custom-built spatial audio microphone). I have visited this location for recordings multiple times in the past, but this time was right in the middle of the avian breeding season. As a result, I was able to record an exceptionally vibrant and bustling dawn chorus of birds.

I have published the 90-minute, unedited recording of this session on YouTube. Please enjoy the realistic transition of the forest's atmosphere—starting with the clear, pristine songs of birds at dawn, and gradually shifting as the sounds of civilization subtly reach deeper into the woods as time passes.

Throughout the timeline, you will also notice acoustic details such as insects buzzing past the microphone at high speeds and propeller planes passing overhead. It is highly recommended to listen to this as background noise while relaxing. (※ If you stay tuned until the very end, there is a small, interesting bonus track...!)

Gear & Technical Specifications

The microphone used for this session is my custom-built "2nd-Order Ambisonic Microphone," which I frequently feature on my blog. It features eight capsules evenly distributed across the entire 360-degree space on the microphone head, allowing it to record sound from all directions—front, back, left, right, up, and down—at the same time.

[Image] Eight capsules are uniformly positioned to cover the full 360-degree perimeter.

I designed this microphone using 3D CAD and fabricated the internal structural parts using a 3D printer. It is a condenser microphone driven by standard phantom power, featuring eight built-in transformer-isolated power circuits within the housing.

The 8-channel A-format audio recorded in parallel was converted into 2nd-order Ambisonics (B-format) within Pro Tools, and then decoded into standard 2-channel stereo for YouTube listening.

[Image] The 8-channel recorder, ZOOM F8, was deployed for this session, capturing high-resolution audio at 96kHz/24bit.

Strong Response from the International Field Recording Community

Since this was a significant milestone, I shared photos and details of this build in "Field Recording," a Facebook community where international field recording enthusiasts and professionals gather. The post triggered a massive wave of responses within the community, keeping my notifications buzzing with comments all day long.

Fellow field recording enthusiasts from across the globe showed intense interest across borders. Beyond receiving high praise for both the audio quality and the physical appearance of the microphone, I was flooded with detailed inquiries regarding the fabrication process and the specific encoding workflows.

Most notably, I received direct praise and highly valuable acoustic feedback from professionals whose names I recognize—including a prominent field recording engineer active in Hollywood film sound and specialists from audio software companies. It made it a truly special day for me.

Microphones that natively support 2nd-order Ambisonics are extremely rare on the commercial market, and only a handful of people worldwide are designing and DIYing them. I believe this is why the project was received with such genuine surprise and curiosity by international experts.

Encouraged by this strong reception, I plan to introduce my work to other international spatial audio communities in the near future.
