【「自分には無理」と決めた瞬間、自由はひとつ減っている】

こんにちは。代々木上原にある鍼灸マッサージ治療院SESHEN代表の星谷 徳梨です。

私の好きな分野のひとつに、テクノロジーがあります。

専門的に学んだわけではありません。
けれど、きっかけははっきりしています。

小学生の頃、自宅にパソコンがやってきました。
いわゆる PC-98 の時代です。

5インチのフロッピーディスク。
ロール紙を歯車で送るプリンター。
OS は MS-DOS。コマンドは手入力。

Windows が登場する前の話です。

黒い背景に打ち込む文字。
無骨で、直感的とは言い難い操作感。

「分からなければ使えない」世界でした。

それでも、私は面白いと感じていました。

なぜ、その道を選ばなかったのか

今振り返ると、不思議なのです。

あの環境に触れていながら、
なぜ私はテクノロジーを専攻しなかったのか。

理由は単純でした。

「自分には無理だ」と、早い段階で決めていた。

勉強は得意ではない。
数学も飛び抜けてできたわけではない。

だから、その道は選ばなかった。

もちろん、得意分野を伸ばすのは合理的です。
向いているものを選ぶのも自然でしょう。

でも今思うのは、
能力の問題というよりも、
“自己制限”の問題だったのではないか、ということです。

小学生の頃に、
自分で自分に線を引いた。

その事実のほうが、興味深いのです。

異質さは、平時には浮く

ここで思い出す人物がいます。

Alan Turing（アラン・チューリング）

コンピューターの原型を構想し、
現代計算機科学の礎を築いた数学者です。

彼はきっと、平時には“変わり者”扱いされたでしょう。

しかし第二次世界大戦という有事の中で、
彼の能力は国家レベルで必要とされました。

ナチス・ドイツの暗号機エニグマの解読に関わり、
その功績は機密扱いとされ、
長い間公にされませんでした。

後に映画『The Imitation Game』で広く知られるようになります。

チューリング・テストという概念も、
彼の名に由来しています。

陰謀は、暴かれて初めて“陰謀”になる

ここで一つ思うことがあります。

陰謀は、暴かれるから陰謀になる。

50年も100年も隠されれば、
それはもはや“陰謀”ですらない。

ただ、歴史の中で見えなくなるだけ。

皮肉な話です。

そしてもうひとつ。

天才と呼ばれる人は、
平時には社会の平均値から外れます。

だから浮く。

でも有事になると、
その異質さが武器になる。

問題は、社会の都合によって
その人の人生が激流に飲み込まれてしまうこと。

ここに、私はやりきれなさを感じます。

自由とは何か

だからこそ、私は「自由」という言葉を大事にしています。

freedom（個人の自由）
liberty（社会的な束縛からの解放）

どちらも選べる時代に、私たちは生きています。

ただし、前提はひとつ。

自分で自分に制限をかけていないこと。

自由は、制限を外すことから始まる

小学生の頃の私は、

「自分には無理」と決めました。

誰かに強制されたわけではありません。

自分で選んだ制限です。

自由とは、
何でもできる状態ではありません。

自分でかけた制限を、
自分で外せること。

その積み重ねが、
人生の選択肢を広げていく。

「無理」と決めた瞬間、
自由はひとつ減る。

でも同時に、
「やってみよう」と決めた瞬間、
自由はひとつ増える。

選択の力は、いつも自分の中にあります。

The Moment You Decide “I Can’t,” You Lose One Freedom

One of my favorite fields is technology.

I never studied it professionally.
But I clearly remember the beginning.

In elementary school,
a computer arrived at our home.

It was the era of the PC-98.

5-inch floppy disks.
A printer that fed roll paper through gears.
MS-DOS as the operating system.
Commands typed manually.

This was before Windows.

A black screen with lines of text.
Rough, not intuitive.

A world where if you didn’t understand,
you simply couldn’t use it.

Yet I found it fascinating.

Why Didn’t I Choose That Path?

Looking back, I find it curious.

Why didn’t I pursue technology
after being exposed to it so early?

The answer was simple.

I decided early on:
“It’s impossible for me.”

I wasn’t exceptional at math.
Academics weren’t my strongest area.

So I didn’t choose that path.

Of course, focusing on strengths is rational.
Choosing what suits you is natural.

But now I wonder
if it wasn’t about ability,
but self-imposed limitation.

As a child,
I drew a boundary around myself.

That is what fascinates me.

Difference Floats in Peacetime

This brings to mind
Alan Turing.

The mathematician who conceptualized
the foundations of modern computing.

In ordinary times,
he was likely considered eccentric.

But during World War II,
his abilities became indispensable.

He helped decrypt the Nazi Enigma machine.
His contributions were classified for decades.

Later, the film The Imitation Game
brought his story to wider recognition.

The Turing Test also bears his name.

A Conspiracy Is Only a Conspiracy If Revealed

A thought arises.

A conspiracy is only a conspiracy
when uncovered.

If hidden for 50 or 100 years,
it simply disappears into history.

Difference often stands out in peaceful times.

But during crisis,
that difference becomes power.

The tragedy is when society’s needs
sweep individuals into forces beyond their control.

What Is Freedom?

That is why I value the word “freedom.”

Freedom — personal autonomy.
Liberty — release from social constraint.

We live in an era where both are possible.

But there is one condition:

Do not impose limitations on yourself.

Freedom Begins with Removing Your Own Limits

As a child, I decided:

“I can’t.”

No one forced me.

It was my choice.

Freedom is not about
being able to do anything.

It is about removing
the limits you placed on yourself.

Each time you remove one,
your choices expand.

The moment you decide “I can’t,”
you lose one freedom.

The moment you decide “I’ll try,”
you gain one.

The power of choice
has always been within you.
