The Dual Personality
Recently, I realized that there seem to be two sides to my personality. In fact, I may have noticed this about myself before - that I have these two different ways of thinking. When I look back on my teenage years, there were times when I thought about things very seriously. But at other times, I was more optimistic, as if everything would work out. I also felt that the future is out of control, so there is no point in worrying too much about things right now.
This kind of mindset has helped me get through my business career. In a business context, we sometimes need to make calm and rational decisions, even if they may make someone feel uncomfortable. For example, we may need to give feedback about poor performance when evaluating team members. In those situations, we need to switch into a "business mode." On the other hand, if we are serious all the time, team members or clients may feel uncomfortable, and their performance may decrease. So I think it's important to adjust our mindset depending on the situation.
I think everyone has two sides to their mindset. The difference is the balance between them - how serious or optimistic each person is. In my case, I think I originally had a more serious mindset, maybe around 70%. To be honest, my serious side tends to overthink and worry too much. However, my friends often describe me as "optimistic." From their point of view, I might seem 80% optimistic. That's because, in conversation with friends, I tend to act more relaxed or easygoing. Why is that? I didn't realize it at first, but I noticed that this way of talking makes conversation smoother. If I spoke from my original, more serious mindset, my responses would probably sound too heavy or too serious. But that kind of response is usually not needed in everyday conversations.
