Main Text(English)
■ Greeting
Hello, this is Tetsujyo from the Wisdom-Centric Theory.
Today’s theme is: “Soundless Sounds, Motionless Movements.”
■ Lighting the Incense
Every morning, before sitting in zazen, I light an incense stick.
At the very tip, a small and fragile reddish-brown flame appears. It slowly penetrates inward, as if making a soundless “juu-wa,” gradually turning into a steady orange glow. It feels as though the flame is quietly saying, “Now, let us begin.”
Soon, the smoke rises, and a sacred atmosphere softly spreads through the space.
The fragrance of incense gently calms the mind and naturally leads me into meditation.
■ The Footsteps of a Cat
I open the window to check the outside air and its scent. I call this practice “Kun-gyō,” a daily ritual.
During this time, I often see a brown cat passing by. Whenever it does, I listen for its footsteps. In reality, the cat is too far away for any sound to reach me. Yet somehow, I feel as if I can hear them.
This morning was particularly cold, and the cat’s steps felt stiff and awkward, as if making a faint “kachi-kachi” sound.
■ The North Wind and Fallen Leaves
When the north wind blows, fallen leaves rustle softly.
Wearing yellow and red hats like kindergarten children, the leaves begin to run one by one as the wind starts, until suddenly they all scatter together, as if playing tag.
“Byuu,” “kasa-kasa,” “kasa-kasa.”
“It’s coming,” “run away.”
Hearing such voices in my mind, I too hunch my shoulders against the cold and hurry along.
■ Soundless Sounds, Motionless Movements
Sounds, scents, light, and colors often carry sensations that cannot be fully expressed in words. When we try to describe them too precisely, we sometimes lose their essence.
The movements felt within the heart may not be physical movements at all. Yet they unmistakably stir something inside us.
The “juwaa” and “fuwa-fuwa” of incense,
the “kita-kita” of fallen leaves,
the stiff “kachi-kachi” footsteps of a cold cat—
all of these quietly permeate the heart as soundless sounds and motionless movements.
■ Conclusion
We often hear phrases like “nourish your heart” or “do what makes your heart happy.”
What do you do for yourself?
Traveling or dining at a nice restaurant can certainly be wonderful. But beyond that, there are simple and gentle ways, right in our everyday lives, to play with the heart, to delight it, and to nourish it.
I invite you to listen quietly, from time to time, to soundless sounds and motionless movements.
That is today’s conclusion.
■ Closing
Thank you very much for reading until the end.
May your day be calm and filled with gentle happiness.
See you tomorrow.
