Spring comes
to the Middle East as well.
It is such an ordinary thing,
and yet—even now, my heart trembles.
Amman, twenty years ago.
In a land clouded by images of desert and war,
I stood bewildered
by the almond blossoms on the hillsides—
blooming so suddenly, so like the sakura.
The scent of daffodils, blooming as if in song.
The jasmine along the streets.
The rosewater used in everyday life.
I was healed each day by those rich fragrances.
The flowers I gaze upon now in Japan
are the very flowers they should have seen.
The girls who should have awaited spring,
just as we do,
their hearts dancing to the scent of daffodils
and the flutter of falling petals.
May their souls be gently embraced
by these soft spring blossoms.
And may the profound pain of their families
be eased, even if only a little.
And yet, once more,
spring will come.
Almond blossoms will open on the slopes of the hills
