The Last Drop-Chapter 2

Chapter 2: The Muddy Currents of Tokyo and the Shaking Ground

The air in the hospital room was heavy with the weight of "Showa 21," the era her grandmother Haru had lived through.

Cradling the rusted iron tin in both hands, Chihiro squeezed out her voice.

"I'm so sorry, Grandmother. I... without knowing any of this, I thought you just wanted to tie me down. I made selfish assumptions and fought back..."

Haru slowly shook her white-streaked head. There was not a trace of blame on her face.

"No, Chihiro. You did nothing wrong. It was just an old woman pushing her own wounds onto you. When you said you were going to Tokyo, that rusted tin inside me began to clang and ring out in terror. ...Because Tokyo is a terrifying place."

At those words, Chihiro let out a small, silent breath of resistance in her throat.

(There she goes again, trying to make me fear Tokyo...)

In Chihiro’s heart, there was a glittering, groundless confidence about her upcoming life in Tokyo.

The city of her dreams. Stylish cafes. The freedom of living alone. With her smartphone, she could easily look up which trains to take, find delicious restaurants, and search for cheap apartments.

She would get a part-time job, wear whatever clothes she liked, and live her life without anyone telling her what to do.

She had thought that "making her own decisions and becoming independent" was not such a massive ordeal—just a gateway into a freer world where things would go exactly as she wished.

"I'll be fine, Grandmother. I'm not a child anymore," Chihiro said, puffing out her chest slightly to reassure her, or perhaps to show off her sense of self-reliance.

"I've researched Tokyo a lot online, and I've already found a few part-time job openings. A few of my friends are moving there too. You don't have to worry so much; I can handle things on my own."

On the bed, Haru stared at Chihiro's "tough front" and the "ignorance-born sense of omnipotence" beneath it. Her gaze was soft, filled with deep, knowing affection.

"Yes. You are grown up now. You can search for anything on your own. ...But you see, Chihiro. The things you can understand just by researching don't even make up half of what it truly means to live."

"Eh...?"

"Your grandmother was exactly the same. Armed only with baseless confidence that I could do anything, that I would make my own choices and survive in that city, I headed to Tokyo. ...That was back in the Showa 30s (1950s), right after I gave birth to your mother."

An old clamor of Tokyo came alive in the depths of Haru's eyes.

"Tokyo back then was completely different from the beautiful city it is today. Every day was filled with the deafening roar of construction and clouds of blinding dust. A vacant lot filled with shacks yesterday would become a massive concrete building the next day. Leading up to the 1964 Olympics, highways were built across the sky and subways slithered and stretched beneath the earth like living creatures.

Everyone was running up the steep hill at a breakneck speed, looking only forward, absolutely obsessed with the idea of becoming wealthier."

Haru took a deep breath.

"In the corner of that raging torrent of a city, I was completely alone, holding your infant mother in my arms. I had managed to cling to life through the charred ruins of the war, but I had no money, and no family to rely on. Looking at my starving baby girl, every single day was a relentless series of 'decisions'."

Haru looked down at her own papery, dry palm.

"Which black market should I go to find rice that isn't spoiled, so I can feed my baby? How hard must I work to raise this child without letting her fall ill in this muddy, swamp-like Tokyo? ...There were no smartphones. No one to give me the answers. If I made a mistake, this tiny life would vanish forever.

I had to think, decide, and act all on my own. All while the cold body of my little sister from Showa 21 hovered constantly in the back of my mind."

Chihiro was left speechless.

The sheer difference in resolution between the "independence" her grandmother spoke of and the "independence" she had imagined sent a cold shiver down her spine.

Was the independent life she had envisioned in Tokyo just a shallow, stylish game of play-house?

She had understood absolutely nothing of the true, harsh gravity of "living" that lay beneath the polished surface of the Tokyo shown on her phone screen.

Relying on no one, bearing the absolute responsibility of your own life—and the lives of others—on a single judgment of your own.

That was the true weight of "deciding for yourself and living."

The groundless confidence that had filled Chihiro's chest crumbled away like a castle of sand.

"...I really didn't understand anything. I talked about deciding for myself so easily, but... I knew nothing about the real Tokyo, or what it means to live."

Chihiro's tough facade peeled away, and a trembling voice escaped her lips.

Haru took Chihiro’s hand back into the wrinkled warmth of her own.

"Are you scared now, Chihiro?"

"...Yes. I'm scared. After hearing your story, I can't bring myself to say I can easily make it on my own in Tokyo anymore."

"That is as it should be," Haru smiled gently.

"Until you know fear, it is nothing but an 'assumption.' Recognizing the true terror, realizing how fragile the ground beneath your feet is, and choosing to move forward anyway—that is what a true 'decision' is.

Within you flows the blood of your grandmother, who survived that turbulent Tokyo, choosing her own path and treading the earth with her own feet, even while terrified and lost.

It is perfectly fine to be scared. It is perfectly fine to be lost. Hold onto that fear, trust your own choices, and take your very first step."

Her grandmother’s words kindled a quiet, unyielding warmth in the depths of Chihiro’s trembling heart.

Acknowledging her own ignorance and learning a true sense of reverence, a genuine resolve was beginning to sprout beneath Chihiro’s feet.
