The Ghost Fires of Rifu Highway

Epilogue: The Whistle of a New Beginning

"Haha! 'Diving into the river to save the cargo'... I still can't believe he wrote that with a straight face!"

Ayumu was still grinning, picturing the chief's pathetic, mud-soaked excuse.

Grandpa Juku chuckled, nodding as he set his teacup down.

"Well, absurd or not, that silly report saved our skins. It kept us out of jail, and both Denji and I got off completely clean. The chief was a bully, but in his own weird, twisted way, he showed a sliver of honor at the very end."

"And as for Denji's truck... the one that vanished into the golden fog... we found it sitting perfectly safe and untouched deep in the pine woods of Iwakiri the next morning,"

Grandpa said, a distant, nostalgic look in his eyes.

"The cargo bay was still locked tight, and the grain was completely intact. Denji rushed home and was finally able to feed his starving little sister hot, steaming white rice. And, keeping his promise to me to never do illegal runs again, he quit the black market for good that very day."

Denji started over, launching a tiny delivery business with nothing but a single wooden handcart.

By prioritizing honesty and real trust above all else, his business rode the wave of post-war economic growth, eventually turning into a massive, highly respected logistics company.

"He became the complete opposite of that credit-stealing chief—a beloved, down-to-earth president. Even after we both grew old and retired, Denji and I would sit right here on this very veranda, drinking tea and laughing about the old days."

His grandfather reached out and gently patted the heavy wooden writing desk standing in the corner of the room.

"This sturdy desk was a retirement gift from Denji. He told me, 'Juku, if you hadn't risked your badge to stop my truck that night, I would've ended up in prison, not a CEO's chair. Please, take this.' He passed away peacefully a few years ago, but until his final days, he'd say: 'I still hear the whistle Juku blew in the fog, and I still see the warm light of the Shinjuro Fox.'"

Grandpa's quiet voice drifted off, leaving a peaceful silence in the room. Ayumu looked down at the polished brass whistle in his hands, then reached out to touch the grain of the wooden desk.

Unlike the sterile glass of his phone, there was a tangible, beating pulse of history right here. The warmth of two young men who stood up to corrupt adults, risked everything to save a friend, and paved their own path in the world seemed to hum through the wood and metal directly into Ayumu's fingers.

"Grandpa. I'm going to write my own novel. No more cheap rip-offs—this is going to be my story."

Ayumu shoved his smartphone deep into his pocket and spread a fresh notebook open across Denji's desk.

"It's about a rookie cop standing up to his boss, and a golden fox deity who watches over the highway, doling out some hilarious divine justice."

"Now that sounds like a masterpiece!"

His grandfather's eyes crinkled with joy as he gave Ayumu's shoulder a proud squeeze.

With pen in hand, all of Ayumu's hesitation vanished. In the quiet room, the crisp, rhythmic scratch of the pen on paper began to echo. It sounded like a whistle blowing for a new beginning—a call blown by Ayumu, echoing straight into his own future.
