The Promise of Dappled Light
Chapter 1: The Destiny of the Arrow and the Man from a Foreign Land (Early Summer)
1. The Dense Forest of the Gods (Ainu Mosir)
Early summer, the 1300s. The forest of the northern land known as "Ainu Mosir" was entirely different from those of Honshu. Colossal, ancient trees stretched upward, blotting out the sky, while the ground below was choked with alien ferns and thickets of sharp, thorny briars. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and wild beasts. If one listened closely, the distant, thundering roar of the crashing sea could be heard echoing from afar.
"Phew... huff... Damn it, how far does this forest even go?"
A young Wajin (ethnic Japanese) man—Genjiro—gasped for breath, parting the dense underbrush with trembling hands. His garments were shredded and filthy, yet underneath the dirt peered the high-quality silk sleeve of a kosode—a clear mark of his high-born warrior pride. He was a samurai of the noble Minamoto clan of Honshu. However, to escape his clan's bloody power struggles and the crushing weight of the destiny forced upon him, he had discarded his identity and slipped aboard a trading vessel bound for the north. He had intended to live out his days as "Gen," a simple merchant's apprentice. Yet the unfamiliar, untamed wilderness of the north mocked his resolve with brutal severity.
Genjiro gripped the hilt of the heavy tachi sword sheathed at his waist. All he had left was this blade and a few pieces of frozen hyorogan (dry warrior rations) tucked into his tunic. But the biting cold of the northern nights had rendered them as hard and cold as river stones.
It was in that moment of despair that the brush behind him shook with a deafening rustle.
"――!?"
The instant Genjiro spun around, a massive shadow eclipsed his vision. Standing nearly ten feet tall, with a matted, jet-black coat slick with mud and old blood, the beast loomed over him. It let loose a rib-shaking roar, radiating pure, suffocating malice. It was the absolute ruler of this forest—the brown bear, known to the locals as Kimun Kamuy.
"You monster...!"
Drawing upon his training as a first-rate swordsman of Honshu, Genjiro unsheathed his blade in a flash. The steel caught the dappled sunlight, gleaming brilliantly. Without taking a single step back, he lowered his stance and lunged forward with lightning speed. Yet, his strike was effortlessly batted away by the bear's powerful, massive forepaw.
Clang!
The sharp, metallic ring echoed through the trees as his beloved sword was sent flying, burying itself deep in the distant dirt. The sheer force of the impact rattled through Genjiro's arms, throwing him to the ground. Looking up, he saw the bear's great jaws part, exposing yellowed fangs as it lunged to tear him apart.
(Is this... the end?)
The pride of the Minamoto, the dreams of a new life—all of it would end here, in this godforsaken place, as fodder for a wild beast. Just as Genjiro resigned himself to death and closed his eyes—
Thwip.
A sharp, whistling wind cut through the silence. Immediately followed by a heavy, wet thud as the massive beast collapsed onto the forest floor.
Genjiro cautiously opened his eyes. The towering beast that had been about to crush him lay motionless, a slender arrow protruding from its neck. The fletching of the arrow bubbled with a dark, sinister paste—aconite poison.
"What...?"
As Genjiro sat there in a daze, a young girl stepped through the dappled light of the canopy.
Her hair was as deep and black as the night sea, and her eyes were a striking, brilliant blue, mirroring the clear northern sky. Keeping her bow drawn with steady, cautious grace, she looked down at the dead bear before turning her gaze to the fallen Genjiro.
"Are you alright... Wajin man (Samo)?"
And so, beneath the ancient boughs, Genjiro and the Ainu girl, Asirpa, met for the very first time.
2. The Warmth of the Chise and the Melting Heart
"Are you awake?"
At the sound of the clear voice above him, Genjiro bolted upright. But a sharp pain shot through his entire body, forcing him to groan and collapse back onto the bedding.
"Do not push yourself. The bear's claws only grazed you, but you are terribly cold."
Looking around, he found himself inside a warm dwelling woven from logs and thatch—a chise. In the center lay a large hearth (irori), where glowing embers filled the room with a gentle, soothing warmth. Standing beside his head was the girl who had saved him, Asirpa. She was looking curiously at Genjiro's torn garments and the fine sword resting nearby.
"Are you a traveling merchant's hand? You carry an awfully grand sword for someone like that."
"...No. I am just Gen, a simple apprentice."
Genjiro lied on impulse. If word got out that he was a samurai of the Minamoto, Honshu's bounty hunters might hunt him down. Above all, he did not want to cause unnecessary friction in this foreign land. Yet, his voice was thin and raspy, trembling with exhaustion and hunger. Now that the extreme tension had faded, a ravenous hunger gnawed at him. Genjiro reached into his tunic and pulled out his frozen hyorogan.
It was a compact field ration made of rice flour, miso, and medicinal herbs kneaded together and dried. But due to his long voyage and the freezing climate, it had hardened into a literal stone. Genjiro brought it to his lips,

trying to bite into it, but it wouldn't budge.
Asirpa watched his struggle quietly. Eventually, she let out a small, exasperated sigh and snatched the frozen ration right out of his hand.
"Hey! What are you doing? That is my—"
"Eating something like ice will only rot your stomach and kill you. You Wajin really don't know how to take care of your own bodies."
Asirpa turned toward a large pot bubbling merrily over the hearth. From the rising steam drifted an incredibly rich, savory aroma that made Genjiro's stomach growl audibly.
"...What is that?"
"Salmon ohaw—a warm soup. It is a gift from the Kamuy (gods) that sustains our lives."
With practiced ease, Asirpa ladled the golden, translucent soup into a wooden bowl (nima). Inside were plump chunks of pink salmon and a generous handful of wild herbs. Then, taking Genjiro's rock-hard warrior ration, she shaved it finely with her knife, letting the shavings fall into the hot soup.
"...Wait, what are you doing? That is precious—"
"Quiet. Just watch."
With a wooden spoon (kasupu), Asirpa gently stirred the soup. Absorbing the rich salmon broth, the dried rice shavings began to swell, softening and plumping up before his eyes. The frozen warrior ration dissolved, its miso and rice blending beautifully with the rich salmon fat, transforming into a thick, exquisite porridge.
"Here. Eat this. It will warm your bones."
As Genjiro took the bowl from her hands, a comforting heat seeped into his palms. The mere touch seemed to coax the frozen blood in his veins to flow once more.
Genjiro swallowed hard, took a spoonful of the porridge, and brought it to his lips.
"――!"
In an instant, his eyes widened. The savory depth of the salmon, the slight, refreshing bitterness of the wild herbs, and the porridge that had soaked up every drop of the rich broth melted softly on his tongue. It was nothing like the delicate, refined cuisine of the Honshu courts, nor was it like the salty, lifeless rations of the battlefield. This was a deep, restorative flavor that tasted of the wilderness itself.
"It's good... It's so good..."
Before he knew it, a single tear escaped his eye and rolled down his cheek. The brutal battles of Honshu, the betrayals, the desperate escape—having to live like a wild dog, unable to show a single moment of weakness to anyone. The rigid armor of his "samurai pride" melted away under the gentle warmth of the bowl, dissolving just like the frozen rations.
"Hehe. It is delicious, isn't it?"
Asirpa smiled warmly as she watched Genjiro devour the porridge, making no attempt to wipe his tears. Her smile was warmer than the hearth fire, settling deep into the coldest corners of his chest.
"We say 'Hinna.' It is our word to show gratitude to the food and to say it is delicious."
"Hin... na..."
Genjiro repeated the word, savoring the warmth blooming inside him.
"Yes, Hinna. You will be alright now, Gen. As long as this forest does not reject you, you can live here."
Asirpa's blue eyes gazed gently into his. To throw away the shackles of Honshu, to live as just a man alongside this beautiful girl in this rich, untamed land— For the first time in his life, a quiet, burning emotion began to take root in Genjiro's heart.
It was the quiet before the storm—the beautiful, fragile beginning of their love.
