Whispers on the Ryukyuan Wind

Episode 5: From Beyond the Horizon 🌅

Silence of the Dawn, Watching the Horizon

The early morning two days after the great tempest was met with an eerie, heavy silence.

The surface of the sea bore the raw, bleeding scars of the storm. Muddy waves rolled listlessly, and the retreating tide washed gray foam over the empty beach. Scattered across the shore were the splintered remains of broken rowboats and tangled heaps of torn fishing nets.

Before the dawn, the deep indigo sky at the eastern edge of the world slowly began to bleed into a brilliant, molten gold.

It was an hour when most had already surrendered, believing the tribute ship (Shinkosen) to be entirely lost, and huddled close to one another in their cold homes. Yet, upon a flat rock at the water's edge stood a single figure, frozen in place, gazing out at the boundless sea.

It was Manazuru (23).

She had not slept a single wink in two full days.

Her dark navy hemp kimono, battered by the relentless sea winds, was stained with salt and grime. Her long black hair was wind-swept and disheveled, but at the crown of her head, the blue glass kanzashi hairpin caught the first faint rays of dawn, flashing a fierce, silent sapphire fire.

"Manazuru... let it go. After a typhoon like that, no ship could possibly survive." "What will become of your shop? Standing here forever will only break your body, girl."

Since yesterday, the elder merchants had spoken these words to her time and again, but Manazuru ignored them all.

Instead, she gently touched the cold glass kanzashi with her own freezing hands. Through her fingertips, she felt as if the warmth of that furamun (foolish idiot) who was still alive somewhere out in that vast ocean was being channeled directly to her heart.

"He won't die," she whispered, her voice dry and raspy, as if uttering a sacred command. "There is no way that idiot would die and leave me to bear the loss of my inventory."

Clenching her dry, cracked lips, she turned her eyes back to the horizon.

And then, it happened.

Just as the golden morning sun sliced through the horizon, turning the entire sea into a dazzling sheet of gold, a single dark speck appeared in the center of the light.

Manazuru's breath hitched.

It was not a drifting log—something she had mistaken a hundred times before.

The silhouette was slow, but it was steadily, unmistakably heading toward the port. Its main mast had been snapped clean off at the base, and it limped forward under a painfully small auxiliary sail. A battered, scarred giant of a vessel, but as it parted the waves to return to Naha, there was no doubt: it was the tribute ship, carrying the King's seal.

"A... a ship!" someone gasped.

"The Shinkosen! The tribute ship is back!"

The cry rang out. One by one, people began to pour out of their homes, racing toward the harbor. The silence that had gripped the port just moments before erupted into a thunderous roar of cheers and disbelieving gasps.

The Golden Miracle, Three Years of Tears

"They're alive... they came back!"

Manazuru could no longer contain the hot, rising tide of emotion in her chest.

Caring nothing for the wooden scale-bag (hakaribukuro) swinging wildly at her hip, she gathered the hem of her hemp kimono in both hands, bunching it up to her knees.

"You idiot, Tarugane!"

Manazuru ran.

She kicked up wet sand, splashed through the mud, and paid no heed to the sharp stones biting into her nearly bare feet. She sprinted with everything she had toward the dock.

The battered vessel drew closer to the stone wharf, and thick, heavy ropes were thrown down.

Upon the deck stood the sailors, their skin caked with white salt, their clothes torn to shreds. They held one another by the shoulders, weeping tears of pure survival and exhaustion.

Through the crowd of weeping men, a towering figure began to descend the gangplank.

His skin was burnt a deep, reddish-black by the sun and salt. His shoulders were broad and powerful. Though his face was etched with countless small, fresh scars, the eyes beneath his wild hair held the same gentle, clumsy warmth from three years ago.

It was Tarugane (26).

His right fist, bruised and caked in dried mud, tightly clutched the frayed, salt-crusted te-mamori amulet of adan leaves. And around his right ankle, the blackened, worn adan anklet she had tied for him still clung to his skin.

"Manazuru!"

Tarugane froze as he caught sight of her.

In the next instant, throwing aside all decorum, the stares of the crowd, and her pride as a rising merchant, Manazuru threw herself blindly into his chest.

"Oof—!"

Tarugane absorbed the impact with his massive frame, wrapping his powerful arms around her, crushing her to him.

Three years of the ocean's freezing cold and the burning warmth of their

reunion melted together in a single, breathless embrace.

"You're late...! You are so incredibly late, you furamun!"

Manazuru buried her face in his indigo-dyed chest, weeping aloud.

The mask of fierce independence she had worn so tightly, refusing to break even when everyone told her he was dead, finally shattered into pieces in his arms.

"I'm sorry, Manazuru," Tarugane whispered, gently stroking her salt-rimed hair. His fingertips brushed against the blue glass kanzashi resting in her tresses. "The storm held us up a bit... But I promised you, didn't I? As long as I had your te-mamori, I would never die."

"Of course you wouldn't..." Manazuru sniffled, wiping her eyes and glaring up at him with her usual stubborn, fiery gaze, though her eyes brimmed with profound relief and love. "Do you have any idea how hard I've fought in the market with this hairpin in my hair?"

"I can only imagine," Tarugane smiled softly, his eyes crinkling. "It suits you. It really is as beautiful as the sea of Naha."

Around them, the harbor erupted into deafening applause, whistles, and tearful cheers.

The rival merchants who had sneered at Manazuru and tried to crush her stood utterly silenced, overwhelmed by the sheer, unyielding tenacity of the sailors and the fierce faith of the young woman who had refused to doubt.

To the Blue Sea, with My Life-or-Death Partner

A few days later, a breathtaking sight unfolded in front of Manazuru’s shop in the bustling market.

Draped over the front display for all to see, still carrying a faint scent of the sea, was the exquisite Ming silk.

When the bright sunlight hit the fabric, it shimmered with an elegant, almost liquid luster, as if it were a living thing. Its overwhelming beauty caused every passerby to freeze in their tracks, letting out gasps of pure admiration.

"Look at this, Tarugane. The sheen, the texture. No other merchant in Naha could ever dream of securing such a masterpiece."

Manazuru stood proudly, chest puffed out, patting her wooden scale-bag with a sharp clack.

"We are going to sell this for the highest price Naha has ever seen, and we'll use that gold to fund our next voyage. Those greedy old merchants won't dare touch our trade routes now. Next time, we'll commission an even larger ship, and we'll bring back spices from the southern seas and porcelain more beautiful than anything you've ever seen!"

"Whoa, hold on, Manazuru," Tarugane laughed, scratching his head, though his face was alight with pride. "I just got back. Are you already planning to send me back out to sea?"

"Of course I am," Manazuru said, turning her head away with a sharp hump, though her ears flushed a soft, warm pink. "You are the only 'life-or-death partner' in the entire world for me, the woman who will become the greatest merchant in all of Ryukyu."

Tarugane only smiled softly at her stubborn, clumsy display of affection. He reached out and wrapped his large, scarred hand firmly around her small one.

Beyond the wooden window of the shop lay the East China Sea, stretching out to the ends of the earth, deep and endlessly blue.

Fourteenth-century Ryukyu.

Across the wild, rising tides of the Great Trading Era, the two of them would sail onward, bound together as a single, unbreakable sail.
