The Silver Screen Couple and a Touch of Ketchup
Episode 1: Asakusa Sunset, the Warmth of Our Hands (Present Day)
Shigeo, ninety years old, and Shizu, eighty-seven, quietly walked through the streets of Asakusa after leaving the retro movie theater.
The bittersweet melancholy of the 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story, which they had just seen, weighed heavily on their hearts.
"‘Tokyo is so wide,’ isn’t it..."
Shigeo muttered softly under his breath.
These were the poignant words spoken by the elderly couple from Onomichi in the movie, as they looked up at the towering buildings of the city.
"It truly is wide, this place. Even though we live in the same city, our boy has his hands full just keeping up with his own life."
Their only son now had a family of his own in Nihonbashi, consumed by the relentless demands of his daily job.
Though he meant no harm, whenever they visited to see their grandson, they always felt a lingering loneliness, as if they were overstaying their welcome.
"The father in the movie said, ‘We’ve become orphans now,’ after losing his wife," Shizu said with a wistful smile, gently clutching the sleeve of her kimono.
"When children drift away, perhaps it means we have finished our ‘role as parents’ and are left all alone."
"...But Shizu," Shigeo paused, looking down at his wife’s slightly hunched shoulders.
"The man in the movie was left all alone, but I still have you."
Shigeo pulled his rugged, calloused hand from his pocket and clumsily grasped Shizu’s cold hand.
How many decades had it been since they last held hands in public?
Shizu was taken back, her cheeks flushing red, but she warmly squeezed his hand in return.
"Forget about the children. Let us cherish the time we have left, just the two of us."
"Yes, my dear."
As the evening bell of Senso-ji Temple echoed in the twilight, the elderly couple walked on slowly, leaning into one another, feeling the deep warmth of each other’s hands.
