The Heat of Connection

Episode 5: The 90th Expo and the Baton to the Future

In the summer of 2026, the streets were wrapped in the feverish excitement of the World Cup.

Yet, Eiichi’s study remained quiet, as if forgetting the noise outside, filled with a comfortable, cool breeze.

It was the afternoon of the day the family gathered to celebrate Eiichi’s ninetieth birthday—sotsuju.

Riku and Yui stood side by side in front of Eiichi’s desk. Their smartphones lay quietly asleep deep inside their respective pockets.

The days of their relationship merely tracing smooth glass screens with their fingers were gone.

Since experiencing the three-hour wait without phones in Episode 4, the distance between them had transformed.

Riku, who once believed his optimized, frictionless life was perfect, now felt a distinct, tangible feedback in his chest.

Whenever he held Yui's hand, he felt an awkward, raw, and precious tactile touch transmitting from her fingertips.

By stripping away the noise of algorithms, they had captured a true temperature using their own heat.

"Grandpa, what are you working on today?"

As Riku peeked in, ninety-year-old Eiichi was lightly tapping the keys on his tablet, sending instructions to a generative AI.

Today, he was working on restoring the vibrant frenzy of the 1970 Osaka Expo—Ōsaka Banpaku—an event he had experienced at age thirty-four.

"AI, arrange a more surging crowd of people at the base of that Tower of the Sun. I want to express the sweat, the dust, and the glaring, feverish heat—nekki—of people gathered from all over Japan back then, looking toward the future."

As Eiichi pressed the enter key, tens of thousands of colorful people came to life in front of the futuristic pavilions on the screen.

It was a moment where the latest technology of 2026, living alongside AI after the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, fused seamlessly with the human geothermal heat of 1970.

"Look at this. Beautiful, isn't it?" Eiichi gazed fondly at the Tower of the Sun on the screen, then gently turned back to look at the young couple. Seeing them firmly holding each other's hands, Eiichi’s white eyebrows twitched with quiet delight.

"You two have good hands now. They are no longer hands that merely trace over glass screens."

With a warm smile, Eiichi reached into his desk drawer and gently pulled out that old, small paulownia-wood box. As he opened the lid, the pitch-black lump of coal—sekitan—sat quietly inside.

Eiichi stacked Riku’s right hand and Yui’s left hand together, and placed the heavy lump of coal gently between their palms.

The rough friction against their skin, the black soot staining their fingertips. Both of them held their breath at the overwhelming weight of this raw, physical reality.

"Eras change, and technology advances boundlessly. The future I saw at the 1970 Expo, the future we saw at the 2025 Expo, and this AI here.

No matter how digitized the world becomes, and even if we lose the tactile texture—tezawari—from our screens, the core of how we survive remains the same.

But no matter how much they progress, smartphones and AI are, in themselves, just cold iron boxes."

Eiichi’s warm hands wrapped around their joined hands from the outside.

"Only when we, the humans using them, stoke them with real coal—the unyielding will to care for someone—does the machinery transform into a golden stove that warms the ones you love.

Just like that flame my mother ran to buy through the howling blizzards of Aomori Port."

"Do not fear technology. Do not let convenient devices steal away your own temperature. Take your own warm heat, and stoke the era you live in."

Riku and Yui looked into each other's eyes and nodded with deep resolve.

The coal in their palms was by no means a cold stone.

It felt as if the warm temperature of Eiichi’s blood—born in 1936 and sprinting toward his hundredth year—and the spirit of Kiyo and Eiji, who survived wars and blizzards, resided within it.

Ten years from now, in 2036. Eiichi would reach his hundredth year, and a new Year of the Mouse—nezumi-doshi—would return once more.

No matter how the world reshapes itself, we will sail our course into the next century with unyielding resourcefulness and love.

In their joined palms, there was a heat that would never burn out, a legacy of warmth—the heat of connection.
