Iceland Day 09. Seal Land

フェリブリャゥンスライクル（Brjánslækur）港

ウエストフィヨルドと、スナイフェルネス半島の間には、片道２時間半かかるフェリーが運行している。

１日２便しかないうえに海が荒れていたら出港しないらしいが、レイキャビクまでぜんぶ運転したら7時間かかるところを1/3くらいラクできるので、ダメでもがっかりしすぎないぞと覚悟を決めて、数ヶ月前からUKのサイトで12時の便を予約していた。

それにしてもアイスランドの地名って、そもそも読めないし、カタカナにしても覚えられないものが多い。

そんなブリャゥンスライクル（Brjánslækur）港に、余裕を持って出港の1時間前に到着したら、すでに何台か先客がいた。

並び方を示した看板かあるばかりのシンプルな港。子供がトイレに行きたいというから道路の反対側の待合室？に行ってみたが、戸は閉まっていて「あちらの教会にカフェあります」という手書きの案内が貼ってあった。徒歩で往復30分。うーん、トイレはフェリーに乗るまでがまんだ。

港のすぐ隣には、かつてノルウェー人が入植したの時代の遺跡があるという看板があったが、草地はズブズブに湿っていて羊のフンも転がっていたので、ちょっと見に行こうという気分にとならず、海鳥を眺めるくらいしかすることがなかった。30分前に着けば十分だった。

フェリーは満車だったが（予約しててよかった！）、客室はゆったりしていて揺れることもなく、中のキオスクでピザやコーヒーも買ってくつろげた。

途中でフラトエイ島（Flatey）に寄港した。寒寒したちっちゃな島たが、そこから乗る人も降りる人もちらほらいて「なんにもない」を求める人向けのアコモデーションもあるようだった。

スティッキスホゥルムル（Stykkishólmur）港

そして、過疎の極みのウエストフィヨルドから到着すると、向かいのスティッキスホゥルムル港は、道路も普通ですごく都会のように感じられた。スナイフェルネス半島では一番大きな町らしい。

この半島はいろいろ見所があるから連泊しながら見て回る人も多いのだが、我々はこの日のうちにレイキャビクに戻るため、ひとつだけ、寄り道するところを決めていた。それがイーツリー・タンガ、アザラシのコロニーがあることで有名な海岸だ。

★イーツリー・タンガ（Ytri-Tunga）海岸のアザラシ

午後3時半くらいに、海岸の駐車場に到着。そこからなんとなく奥の岩場にむかって歩いていくと、いた、いた。あざらしがゴロゴロ！

基本的にみんな対岸でどべーっとしているのだが、時折、好奇心旺盛なやつが人間を観察しに近づいてくる。

多分、彼らにとって海の中はオンで陸の上はオフなのだろう。そうでないと、あまりにダラーっとし過ぎている。双眼鏡で見てもピクリとも動かない。岩や海藻のような色をして、ゴロゴロ、ダラダラ。これって、かわいい・・・のかな？しかし、子供たちは大喜びだった。

なお、イーツリー・タンガの駐車場にはトイレがない（有料のくせに！）でも、車で5分くらいのガソリンスタンドには、コンタクトレスカードで使える綺麗な有料トイレがあった。

そんなこんなで、レイキャビクに到着したのは夕方の5時を過ぎていた。最終日はきっとぐったり疲れてるだろうと想像してダウンタウンのホテルをとっていたけど、予想外に元気満々だったのでアパートでもよかったと思った。（街中は一方通行だらけだし、駐車場も高いし！）。アイスランドのドライブは、最初から最後まで、大地からエネルギーをチャージされる感覚に満ちていた。

せっかくなのでお土産を買い足しながら繁華街をぶらぶらした。有名なレインボーストリートでは、映え写真を狙っている人がいっぱいいた。

このホットドッグスタンドがすごくおいしいというので有名なのだけど、最終日の夕食には気分ではなかったので写真を撮っただけ。

かわりに行ったのは、カジュアルなスープのお店。ラム・スープや手長エビのスープは全部食べられるパンのボールで頼んだら、味がしっかり染みてとても美味しかった。

デザートのワッフルは無料サービスだけど、そこに行き着く前にお腹いっぱいになっちゃった。おすすめ。

唯一の失敗は、スーパーマーケットの閉店時間が早いことを失念していて、ラム肉や乳製品など、お土産に仕入れる予定だったものを買い損ねてしまったこと。翌朝の便も早かったので、空港でしか買い物できなくて痛恨の失敗だった。

Tips from Day 09

There's a ferry between Brjánslækur in Westfjords and Stykkishólmur in Snæfellsnes peninsula. The crossing will take 2.5 hours, but it is a significant time-saver compared to the seven-hour drive to Reykjavík. While there's a risk of cancellations due to the weather, I booked it a few months in advance via the website.

Arriving at the harbour an hour early for the noon ferry, we found a few cars were already before us. However, there was not much to do except watch sea birds dipping around. A damp meadow nearby had a sign explaining that there was a ruin of first settled Norwegians, but the grass was muddy and littered with sheep droppings. Not lovely. I took my girl to a small office across the street seeking a bathroom, but There was a handwritten note on the closed door, directing us to a café in the nearby church. A 30-minute round trip? …well, let's wait for the ferry.

The ferry was packed in the garage area, but the cabin was spacious and calm. There was even a kiosk where we could buy bites and drinks.

On the way, it stopped briefly at Flatey, a small island. A few people got on and off, and there seemed to be accommodations for those seeking solitude.

At the Stykkishólmur port after the remote Westfjords, it felt like we had arrived in a metropolis. The roads were paved, and the town was bustling. Indeed, it is the biggest town in the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

This peninsula is known for being full of attractions, so many people stay for a night or two to explore. However, since we had to return to Reykjavík that day, we decided to make just one stop: A famous beach known for its colony of wild seals.

At 3:30 p.m., we arrived at Ytri-Tunga. We walked along the coast toward the rocky area where people gathered, and there they were: a lot of seals! Lounging around offshore rocks.

Most of them were chilling on the other side of the beach, but some curious ones would come closer to check us out.

Please take care; we couldn't find a restroom in the parking lot. Instead, there is a gas station a five-minute drive away with a huge sign saying "restroom available." There are clean toilets that you can pay with contactless cards.

We arrived in Reykjavik well past 5 p.m. I booked a downtown hotel,  expecting we would be exhausted on the last day. However, to our surprise, everyone was full of energy.

We wandered downtown to Rainbow Street, where we picked up some souvenirs. Then we went to a casual soup restaurant. We ordered the lamb and lobster soups in big bread bowls, and they were delicious. They offered free waffles for dessert, but we were already too full! I can recommend the Icelandic Street Food!

My only regret was missing out on buying some Icelandic treats at the local supermarket. They close too soon (like 6:00 p.m.). Our flight the next day was early in the morning, so I should have visited them before dinner.
