🏔 Mt. Shirouma – A Sunrise Trail Run in Japan's Northern Alps

By Abu – Hiking enthusiast based in Niigata, Japan

🌸 Why Mt. Shirouma is So Special

Rising to 2,932 meters, Mt. Shirouma (also spelled Hakuba-dake) is one of the most iconic peaks in the Northern Japan Alps and part of the country's prestigious Hyakumeizan (100 Famous Mountains of Japan).

Here’s why hikers love it:

  • Home to Japan’s three great snow valleys, including the famous Shirouma Daisekkei, a snowfield that lasts deep into summer.

  • Over 345 species of alpine flowers bloom across its slopes, earning it the nickname “Flower Mountain.”

  • The peak is part of the Shirouma Sanzan, a trio of stunning mountains that includes Shirouma, Shakushi, and Yari-ga-take.

  • You can start your hike at Renge Onsen (1,475m), a rustic hot spring lodge with panoramic outdoor baths. A perfect pre-hike or post-hike soak.

🥾 Route Overview (August 18, 2019)

Trail style: Trail Run & Fast Hike
Start: Renge Onsen (3:00 AM)
Route: Renge Onsen → Hakuba Oike (Alpine Lake) → Mt. Korenge → Mt. Shirouma (summit) → Shirouma Hut → return via same trail
Finish: Renge Onsen (10:30 AM)

  • Distance: 18.2 km

  • Elevation gain: 1,776 m

  • Moving time: 7 hours 35 minutes

  • Recorded with: Suunto Ambit3 Peak

🌄 Trail Highlights – A Magical Sunrise from the Alps

We left Renge Onsen in the early morning darkness. Hiking by headlamp through the forest brought a sense of peaceful anticipation.
After briefly getting off-trail (a 20-minute detour!), we retraced our steps and got back on course.

As we climbed higher, the sky began to glow. We arrived at Hakuba Oike (White Horse Alpine Lake) just in time to witness a breathtaking sunrise over a sea of clouds. The sky was incredibly blue, and we were surrounded by a quiet, sacred beauty.

Moments like that remind me: “This is why we hike early.”

🏔 Reaching the Summit of Shirouma

By 7:00 AM, we reached the summit of Mt. Shirouma (2,932m). The view was phenomenal: the ridgelines of the Northern Alps stretched endlessly in every direction.
We could see Mt. Tsurugi and the Tateyama Range clearly in the distance.

On the summit, we had breakfast—egg sandwiches and coffee—while soaking in the beauty. There's nothing quite like sharing a meal above the clouds.

⛷ The Descent & Hot Spring Recovery

After a short break at the Shirouma summit lodge (Shirouma Sansō), we began our descent, jogging gently on the trail to avoid crowding others.
We returned to Renge Onsen by 10:30 AM, but instead of taking a bath there, we opted for a local favorite:
Miyama-no-Yu, a beautiful hot spring near the roadside station Otari—a perfect way to unwind.

🎒 My Gear List (Fast & Light)

📝 Final Thoughts

We had perfect weather from start to finish—a rare treat in the high mountains of Japan.
Even in summer, 3,000-meter peaks like Shirouma can change weather suddenly, so it's important to check forecasts and gear up accordingly.

Even though this hike was from 2019 and I didn’t record a detailed plan at the time, the memory remains strong. Going forward, I plan to log my hiking plans and compare them with actual timing for better preparation and insights.

If you're looking for a hike that combines alpine flowers, panoramic ridgelines, sunrise views, and a real sense of achievement, Mt. Shirouma from Renge Onsen is an unforgettable experience.
