John F. Kennedy International Airport
Functionalism of the Golden Age of Aviation, or the horizontal tension portrayed by cantilevers
It physically fixed the "sense of buoyancy" at the dawn of the jet age. The extreme transparency, composed solely of glass membranes and steel frames, is a pure crystallization of the rationalism reached by Mid-century Modernism. The pride of serving as the "path of the chosen," which the Concorde once entered, is etched into the unadorned steel frames. The ceilings are low, and the field of vision is linearly limited. The matter-of-fact rationality of New York compels the user to execute the "procedure of movement" with detachment.
Completed in 1970. Once a hub for BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation), it represents the golden era of transatlantic routes symbolized by the Concorde. A place where the lingering scent of the British Empire—built on foreign initiative—and the ambition of America that accepted it, intersect. Here, the aspiration of crossing borders and the dry, matter-of-fact materialism of modern New York coexist.
Frankfurt Airport
A monument to West German industrialism, or the layered megastructure of Brutalism
A complex of exposed concrete and metal symbolizing the technological self-esteem of post-war West Germany. The structure—where thick pillars supporting massive loads and intricately intertwined utility piping are integrated—embodies architecture as a machine where function itself becomes formal beauty, preserving the heavy atmosphere of the Cold War era with its overwhelming mass. The aluminum grid ceilings and "yellow signs" flaunting West German technological prowess announce that this space is under perfect discipline.
Opened in 1972. Toward the 23:00 night flight restriction (curfew), the entire system is driven with a faint sense of irritation. While a symbol of West Germany's economic miracle, excessive vigilance against terrorism by the Red Army Faction (RAF) during the 1970s and 1980s formed a labyrinthine structure and a functionalism that excluded any playfulness. The "correct flow" dictated by signboards makes even the gaps where shuttle buses run look like part of advanced surveillance and management.
Beijing Capital International Airport
Socialist Modernism in transition, or monumental symmetry achieved by large-span structures
A site where national prestige was converted into physical mass at the turn of the century. Symmetry staked on socialist prestige and a gently arching canopy suggest the powerful embrace of the state, while the inorganic spatial composition, stripped of ornamentation, visually symbolizes the "disciplined development" of a rapidly growing China. The vast spatial capacity created by modern truss structures and massive granite floors swallows the presence of the scattered crowds, creating a strange silence.
A space that solidified the "Will of the State" as it emerged from turmoil following the Tiananmen Square incident toward becoming a superpower, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the state in 1999. Destroying the old streets of Beijing (Hutong), the value of "Power" was expressed through the mass of granite. Mirror-polished stone floors reflect the lighting coldly. Even the light from 24-hour shops is swallowed by the stone's absolute silence.
Sheremetyevo International Airport
A legacy of Soviet Constructivism, or the strict grid order of precast concrete
A space where Soviet prestige and surveillance systems took shape as the sole, and heaviest, gateway for stepping from the West into the "socialist abyss." The exterior, composed of the repetition of identical modules, expresses collectivist order and mechanical stability as an immutable dignity sought by the regime of that era, while the honest structure, which does not hide the "weight" of the materials, conveys to the present a "heavy future" from an era when surveillance and tension were daily life.
A masterpiece of late Soviet Modernism, built with the full weight of national pride for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Memories of the KGB’s gaze, unnatural silences, and a space deprived of freedom form a dense atmosphere, as if decades of time were trapped in amber. Orange light leaking from honeycombs turns everything sepia, and heavy marble pillars that swallow sound are stained into the brass ceiling panels as a heavy yet ornate ideology of an era that restricted free movement.
Paris–Charles de Gaulle Airport
Paul Andreu’s spatial revolution, or the fusion of centripetal force and circulation born of a circular structure
A complete cylindrical concrete monolith that overturns the traditional concept of a terminal. Centered on a core atrium, the distribution of force radiates outward. The structure, contrasting the "stillness" of concrete with the "motion" of escalator tubes traversing the void, possesses the quality of a near-future work of art that treats architecture as kinematics. The concrete cylinder, with windows reduced to the absolute minimum, becomes an aviation fortress that shuts out the exterior and imposes its own internal discipline.
Completed in 1974. Under Gaullism, the ideals of technocrats who dreamed of an avant-garde future manifested a "living machine" with veins of transparent tubes. Cold rationalism, designed to process humans efficiently, is crystallized into a cylindrical Brutalist architecture. Geometric purity severs the continuity of everyday life, transforming the user into a pure moving entity.

Low ceilings and the texture of well-worn metal. The blazing neon of a "Hudson News" stand garishly illuminates the benches in front of aging gates.
Voices of people rushing through narrow corridors mingle with the electronic hum of old flight boards and monitors.
Travelers waiting for late-night flights to Europe fill every seat in the cramped boarding area, eyes fixed on newspapers or smartphones in a temporary escape from the New York clamor.
A scent of "obsolete institutions" lingers in a space where the era of glory has ended, leaving only function. The steel frame emits the cold, detached indifference characteristic of New York.
The music absorbs the hard texture of the steel. It synchronizes the dry tension of the space into a "quiet immersion" for the journey to the next continent.

Exposed concrete beams and a silver aluminum ceiling. Vivid yellow directional signs dominate the inorganic space with a visibility that borders on violent.
The hum of the "Skyline" automated shuttle overhead combines with the low rumble of shuttle buses echoing from deep within the concrete.
Inside a space resembling the interior of a massive precision machine, businesspeople tap away at laptops on functional desks, while travelers wait quietly on stainless steel benches against the walls.
An air of "suspicion" and "control" permeates the environment. A distinct German rigor stiffens the bodies of individuals attempting to relax.
The music does not deny the irritation born of discipline but layers its rhythm over the system. It supplies a pulse that allows the body to settle within the managed order.

Massive granite floors polished to a mirror finish. They sharply reflect the fluorescent lights and 24-hour convenience stores, making the space so bright and cold it disorients one’s sense of up and down.
The continuous "shhh" of cleaning machines moving across the vast stone plains. In the immense void, the footsteps of people echo hollowly.
People are positioned like equidistant dots in the shadows of colossal pillars or near wall outlets. In this defenseless expanse, travelers endure the coldness of the stone while quietly guarding their own territory.
A sense that individual emotions and fatigue are ignored in the face of the state's monumental pride. The stone plains enforce a silence that is quiet yet nearly violent.
The music "earths" itself in the overwhelming mass of the stone. Rather than being crushed by the excessive spatial volume, it uses the stone's steadfastness to ground the spirit.

Brass-colored honeycomb panels across the ceiling diffusely reflect orange lighting, bathing the entire space in sepia. Heavy marble pillars and gaudy LED duty-free ads create a jarring discordance.
Low ceilings seem to swallow the whispers of the crowd. The heavy drone of air conditioning mixes with clear announcements in Russian.
Passengers on long layovers sit in silence under the low light, heavy coats draped over their knees. A sense of "stagnation" drifts through the air, severing travelers from the flow of time.
A lingering suspicion peculiar to former borders: the feeling that "one is not safe until they have left." A sense of weight without an exit, reminiscent of the Soviet Union's Era of Stagnation (Zastoy).
The music provides organic ventilation to the stagnant space. It filters the weight of a relic from the past into a "mellow waiting" to savor the passage of time.

New white LED lights reflect off windowless concrete walls, creating a high-contrast play of light and shadow. In the central atrium, people are carried slowly through transparent escalator tubes.
The "click-clack" of footsteps echoes through the circular corridors. The rhythmic drive of moving walkways toward the underground satellites hums steadily.
Travelers sit in rounded chairs near the gates, staring at inorganic concrete walls as they wait for departure.
The sensation of being a "will-less specimen" as one is carried through the escalator tubes. A 70s-era cold elitism still seeps from the surface of the concrete.
The music resonates with the circular rhythm of the ring, establishing a "floating rest"—the point furthest from reality at the end of the week.
