The Meaning That Time Changes

An event may feel like a “fixed meaning,” something complete in that very moment. Yet time quietly rewrites that meaning. Time is not only about consuming moments; it transforms what once felt finished into something fluid and open to change. A heartbreak or a failure that feels unbearable in the present can, with years of distance, take on new colors and new interpretations.

On the night of a first heartbreak, it might feel like the world has ended. But a few years later, you may look back and call it the moment that helped you grow. Human memory cannot dwell on the same agony forever—we inevitably forget, or at least soften the edges. That is why sadness and joy alike shift little by little over time. Even a great failure can later be reframed as a “repeatable lesson.” Though an event itself happens only once, its meaning can be repositioned again and again within the flow of time.

Words or actions from someone you once could not understand may reveal, through the lens of time, a clumsy kindness or a hidden intention you can only now grasp. An event is not confined to “the fact of its happening = a fixed meaning.” Rather, its significance is rewoven when we look back from the future. What once felt like hell might eventually turn into a story you can laugh about.

Time, then, is not only past, present, and future—it can also be seen as memory, intuition, and expectation. In this sense, even past events can be “re-edited” in the present, changing their meaning. The meaning that time changes is the act of repositioning experiences and redesigning their significance. In other words, it is the practice of “designing the context of time.” And you may already be doing this unconsciously.

That’s all for today.
