A Surprisingly Calming Book for Toddlers Who Won’t Go to Sleep

There was a stretch of time when bedtime just… didn’t start.
My 3-year-old was clearly tired but kept moving — playing, talking, finding one more thing to do.
Even after saying goodnight, the energy didn’t settle, and our nights quietly grew longer.
I had heard about The Midnight Ghost (Nenai Ko Dare Da), but I hesitated.
I worried it might feel too scary before sleep.
At first, the reading looked like any other night — fidgeting, shifting around, not really listening.
But page by page, the movement slowed.
By the end, they were completely still, watching carefully.
When I closed the book, they softly said, “I’m going to sleep,” and lay down.
No sudden burst of play, no getting up again — which was unusual for us.
It didn’t feel like fear.
It felt more like they understood that nighttime had begun.
Since then, we don’t read it every night, but on evenings when the transition feels hard, it works almost like a signal:
the day is over.
For toddlers around ages 2–4 who struggle to switch from playtime to bedtime, this book can gently help mark that change.
It doesn’t fix every night — but sometimes it makes the start of sleep easier.
