The sun was out but the rolling thunder kept on throbbing like a slow palpitating heart. Thick air fit snugly around them and their weak breath. With blankets decorating the shoulders, stillness sprawled at their feet, and the sun shone brighter than before. Birds either in trees or on rotting wood cawed in what the streetlights thought were the moon’s rotation. They saw that it was still but their arms knew that there were reverberations. Slowly burning the coils in their hands they watched the smooth cackling embers melt closer into their safety. They did not burn the fire again, but they did steal the water and laugh inwardly. “Honey, I’ve been working harder and harder each day, so come around and meet me in the grass. I'm hungry but we'll say it over and over and only then will we be finally satisfied.” It wasn’t going to end but it felt like the last stop. One of them tied his bottle to his waist and kept on walking down mountain into the deep fissure.
