You've been very vocal about nu-metal in general and Fred Durst in particular. How do you feel about [Jul. 20th, 2004|11:09 am]

"I want it changed. I want it changed now. I need it changed. We all do. Stop pretending you like it. You know you hate it. It'll be gone as fast as Wham! was, only without the dignity that Wham! left behind. Durst is so rigorously faux-masculine that he looks like a male impersonator. I'd love to think he was making fun, but there is no evidence. His satire is all surface, abstract. He's singing for the kids about people, y' know, who are evil and lie to the kids, man. He has no sexual straightforwardness. He doesn't even see women. I saw a quote from him about how if a woman 'wants' him, she has to come right up to him and let him know she's gonna fuck him. No flirty looks can pierce his self-absorption, his important 'thinking' about his homies and the plight of the black man and his 'vice-presidency' at Interscope.

"A lot of nu-metal strikes me as if a nation of boys decided that the concept of sex with girls was exactly as Johnny Rotten described it: "Three minutes of squishing and huffing". Fred's a golfer and an executive. I find nothing in his voice, nothing of value, nothing of sex or art or death or love. It's a void and the truth of the matter is he hasn't really sold that much. He's not some sales phenomenon. He's a primo ass-kisser. Sting sells a lot more than Fred and I certainly don't see Sting golfing on the links with attorneys who say things like, 'The artists are the rotten fruit that falls in the orchards and we are the trees'."
