Neoteleostei é um grande clado de peixes ósseos, constituído principalmente por clados marinhos. Apenas 3 linhagens possuem espécies de água doce: Percopsiformes (trutas-percas), que vivem exclusivamente em água doce,[1] Gadiformes (bacalhau), que é em grande parte marinho, exceto pelo lota-do-rio que vive em água doce e algumas populações de bacalhau em água salobra,[2][3] e Percomorpha, que, além de vários grupos marinhos, também possui muitas formas de água doce.[4]
Os membros restantes de Neoteleostei são marinhos: o clado populoso dos Acanthopterygii, que consiste nos Beryciformes, Holocentridae e nos Percomorpha mencionados anteriormente (que incluem famílias como atum, cavalos-marinhos, gobiídeos, ciclídeos, linguados, bodiões, percas, tamboril, baiacu),[5] os Ateleopodidae (medusas),[6] os Lampriformes (peixes-remo, opah, peixe-fita),[7] os Zeiformes (dóris),[8] os Polymixiiformes (peixes-barbudos),[9] os Stylephorus,[10] os Myctophiformes (peixes-lanterna) e os Aulopiformes (peixes-lagarto), que incluem algumas espécies de água salobra. A ordem marinha Stomiiformes já foi incluída nos Neoteleostei como parte da superordem Stenopterygii, mas desde então foi colocada em Stomiati fora dos Neoteleostei.[11][12][13][14][15]
A bexiga natatória, quando presente, é fisoclistosa, uma característica também compartilhada com as ordens não-Neoteleostei Argentiniformes e Stomiiformes.[16][17][18][19]
Os Neoteleostei também perderam as enzimas NOS2 e NOS3, sendo esta última uma característica que compartilham com o restante dos Clupeocephala e possivelmente com os Latimeria (NOS2 e NOS3 ainda não foram detectados em Elopomorpha).[20][21]
