Wow. Where did the friends go?

It's been too long and I've not been in touch. Too much time spent on Facebook. It's like being at a loud boisterous party with too many people talking at once, then you walk down the corridor to the last room on the right, open the door, walk in, close the door behind you, sit back, and there are the friends from LJ, hanging out, talking, no big crowd to hurt your ears. Peace. Camaraderie.

I'm on a campaign to help the needy, even if it is by spreading awareness. Since I don't have a lot of money to spare, I've spread the word to those who may have a bit more to spare than I do. I think I'm going to end up buying some chickens or a goat for a family. I've got to do something...

Anyway, if you have time, take a look at some websites and see if you can't support someone and give a helping hand.

To help those in the U.S and elsewhere:
http://www.globalgiving.org/dy/v2/content/countries.html?country=United%20States

To help kids with school supplies, businesses with micro loans, getting a former enslaved prostitute shelter and counseling, etc. browse here:
http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/oprahshow/pkgregistry/20090925-tows-microloans

Help for FREE. <lj:music>Magdelene's House - Abdul Aziz El-Sayed</lj:music>

Since September there have been some health scares and such. I had a skin cancer scare that spurred a week-long descent into anxiety attack madness that was only relived, finally, through the marvels of modern medicine (LONG LIVE XANAX!) and the anticipated removal of the tiny mole in question. After waiting nearly three weeks to hear the results, I was told that, although the changes the mole was experiencing were severe, it was, after all, benign.

I went to my general practitioner doctor, who took one look at my scar on my arm and remarked, "Wow... yeah, they were aggressive about this."

Seems my dermatologist and the plastic surgeon decided to really make sure all was removed and did a margin test and an extraction rather than just a plain ol' biopsy cut. I am fine, after all, but it shook me to my core. I am relieved I have the fall and winter of Chicago so I can stay clear of sun exposure. What will I do when I want to be farmaiola in the my garden? SUN SCREEN.

Also, my mother is exhibiting symptoms of either mild dementia or early Alzheimer's. She is experiencing short-term memory loss. We have tried removing gluten from her diet to ease inflammation, but something has exacerbated a stomach issue that we are trying to diagnose now, so the mind issue will have to wait a few weeks while we grapple with another health issue. Peptic ulcers? Worsening hiatal hernia? Every week brings something new. Mom is 71, and right now, her health is an issue. Good thing nothing developed from MY issue; how would I manage?

No use pining for my carefree days of my 20's (they weren't that carefree, not with a violent, bitter dad with an ax to grind - against my skull). No use freaking out and worrying whether my life as I know it will soon be over or whether I have even BEGUN living a life that I am pleased with, content with. While my sister and I take on the burden of an ailing parent, no use worrying about what troubles will come; it is imperative we take this one day at a time and to arm ourselves with information and pray for patience.

Will I need to be her care-taker? The future will be here soon enough; no sense dumping every single unknown onto my head adn trying to figure it all out during the wee small hours of the morning. As they say, one day at a time. My one comfort is that my mother is not alone. We'll take care of things as best as we can, whatever may come.

Of course I think on what will become of me when I am old, but, really, do I even know I will reach the age of being elderly? The future's not ours to see. Che sarà, sarà.

So, with the yawning unknown before me, I move on. Fragile, human, scared, mortal, precariously set upon a churning wave. So this is what it's like being an adult. I just want to live some of the freedoms and joys of being an adult as well; I don't want my life to be absorbed solely by the whims, demands, and occurrences of the lives of my parents. Dutiful daughter, me. Meanwhile, a life is to be lived. Right now I am not content to be subservient to Chance, but what choice have I?

This season's lesson is surrender. Surrendering to what is.

I'm on Facebook a lot these days, but you know what? I can't really write anything serious there. Facebook feels like those peripheral friends at school you can joke all day with, but then you can't wait to get home to the neighborhood kids who really know you, can see you walking to your house and can see something's wrong, and they ask "What's going on?" and you sit on the stoop and tell them about your day. And they listen.

No one is very serious on FB. It's a non-stop party sometimes. Nauseating, really. It's nice to keep in touch, but, jeeze, aren't there clouds in anyone's skies?

It's not a forum for soul-letting or soul searching, for that matter. It's LOL or ROFL or OMG... Life's just not that fucking funny every day, you know?

I've met some nice people on there, but it's very polite company. I got it. It's not LJ. Here, it's much more intense, personal, intimate, if that's possible. SUre, it's possible, because t the writing dictates the atmosphere. SUre, we laugh it up and goof off here all the time! But... it's different. There seems to be an element of confidence and trust here I have grown to like. I hope I offer that to the friends on my list as well. Sure, not all friendships are that way here, and that is fine. But Facebook is just that - the surface, the facade of the building, and not so much anything deeper that that.

So, I think I'm missing my LJ forum more than I first realized. I miss my LJ friends.

    <lj:music>none for now...</lj:music>

Not so sure how to feel when a celebrity dies. I don't know him, but he brought joy in my life through his music and performances. He was a little kid when I was an even littler kid! I feel like we grew up together. I am sad to see a talented person die so young.

I am sad for his family, his children, and sad about his tragic life as an abused kid, a performing monkey, and an obvious social misfit, fucked up by gross celebrity. I am the type of person who does not rush screaming toward a celebrity when I see them; I like to just nod and smile, and let them move on, living their lives.

How can anyone with that kind of upbringing, that kind of fame, have a normal life? How can someone like that NOT die a tragic, untimely death? It's almost inevitable.

It makes me think of how much I love to sing, how much I love to perform, and how thankful to the Powers that Be that I am not a celebrity, I am not famous. Yeah, I'm poor, but I'm not in 400 million dollars debt and I'm not addicted to prescription drugs. I'm just little old me, feeling sad and heavy-hearted about the loss of an icon, a giant, a talented man who had his share of darkness, his share of demons, but his were global scale and gigantic and known all over the world.

This guy gave his all, grew up fucked up and weird inside, and there was no helping that, it seems. And his body broke down eventually because of it. You can give all the love you have to give, but still be broken and weird inside.

Whatever the news throws at us in the next month or so, however out of control the media circus becomes, I want to remember a young talented man passed on, and he enriched a lot of people's lives, influenced many people, and he was loved dearly by friends and family, like all of us are, despite our dark sides, our shortcomings.

Torrential downpours, thunder, lightning - bring it on! I love Spring rains. Everything smells so fresh, the earth is alive - it's different than a winter rain. Although several days of gloom and grey skies do tend to throw me into melancholy, I am keeping my - trying to keep my - eye on the flowers and plants to come, the hours of sunlight and gardening, and the warm warm weather that will arrive later on this week. For now, I enjoy the sound of the rainfall, the sounds of birds, and that awesome rumble of thunder! It's great to see flowers coming up, kids playing outdoors, verdant lawns and medians, parks and forest preserves - that old song from grade school plays on in my head:

Spring is the time of year when the robins sing and the grass is green once gain
Spring is the time of year when the earth has come alive once more
So smile and be happy, sing and be gay
Throw all your cares and troubles away
Spring is the time of year when the earth has come alive once more!

    <lj:music>Com'è Bello Fa' L'Amore Quanno È Sera - Claudio Villa</lj:music>

A man in Grand Rapids , Michigan incredibly took out a $7000 full page ad in
the paper to present the following essay to the people of his community.

HOW COULD YOU? - By Jim Willis, 2001
When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You
called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of
murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad,"
you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" - - but then you'd
relent and roll me over for a belly rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were
terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of
nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and
I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks
and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone
because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the
sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more
time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you
through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad
decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in
love. She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" - - still I welcomed her
into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy
because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was
fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them,
too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my
time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love
them, but I became a "prisoner of love." As they began to grow, I became
their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs,
poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my
nose. I loved everything about them and their touch - - because your touch
was now so infrequent - - and I would've defended them with my life if need
be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret
dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you
produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me.
These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had
gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog ," and you resented every
expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they
will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the
right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only
family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It
smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the
paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged
and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle -
aged dog, even one with "papers." You had to pry your son's fingers loose
from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my
dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about
friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for
all life. You gave me a good - bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and
politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to
meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you
probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to
find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked, "How could
you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules
allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first,
whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that
you had changed your mind - - that this was all a bad dream... or I hoped it
would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of
happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and
waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and
I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet
room. She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to
worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was
also a sense of relief.. The prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears
weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.
She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her
cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years
ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the
sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily,
looked into her kind eyes and murmured, "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dog speak, she said, "I'm so sorry." She
hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a
better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to
fend for myself - - a place of love and light so very different from this
earthly place. And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with
a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was
directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of
you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you
so much loyalty.

A Note from the Author: If "How Could You?" brought tears to your eyes as
you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the
composite story of the millions of formerly "owned" pets who die each year
in American & Canadian animal shelters. Please use this to help educate, on
your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin
boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an
important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care,
that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility
and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good
advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the
killing, and encourage all spay & neuter campaigns in order to prevent
unwanted animals.

Please pass this on to everyone, not to hurt them or make them sad, but it
could save maybe, even one, unwanted pet. Remember...They love
UNCONDITIONALLY.

Now that the tears are rolling down your face, pass it on! Send to everyone
in your address book and around the world! This IS the reality of dogs given
up to shelters!

When Parents Get Old...

This is about parents who are kind of losing their threads. Come bill-paying time, Mom has new and exciting ways of paying bills each month; she likes the variety. Familiarity, after all, breeds contempt. Sometimes the bills are late, sometimes they are forgotten altogether. Sometimes she wants to be driven to the bank to pay them, sometimes she wants me to write checks for them. Today, out of the blue, we went to the bank to make money orders for some, and we went to the currency exchange to pay the others. Each time, i was involved in the transactions, giving out my IDs, signing this and that, making sure the bills were done properly - at one point she handed me a pile of bills without the tear-away bottom tabs, the ones that either go with the checks or the ones that you give to the cashier at the C. exchange. I took the pile of mess and told her this is not the way I want to pay bills every month. This, I motioned to the pile in disarray, is CRAZY. We need a system. I was clearly upset, flummoxed, but not angry so much as sad and confused at how her head works - or...

She fished out the tabs - in a separate envelope - and I handed them to the cashier. Then she handed me a check, saying "cash this." We needed her SS #. "I don't carry that with me." So I handed the check back to her, asking why she didn't have the BANK cash it a few miles back. "I forgot." What a MEGILLAH.

As I was tearing up extraneous envelopes and throwing them away and preparing paperwork, a man of about 50 walked up to me and said, softly, "God bless you." I looked up. "I know what you are going through, my dad is the same way." He had this look of camaraderie and compassion, nodding and sporting a half-smile.

"I just don't want her to get more confused than she already is," I explained. He nodded in understanding.

I felt terrible for my mom, she is not so bright about the money any more. I knew she felt embarrassed, that was why I did not get mad, because I know I'd be mortified, like the way the teacher treated me in first grade because I was math-retarded. I HATED feeling like the only one who had no clue what was going on. Its a sick feeling. I NEVER will make ANYONE feel that way EVER. She used to take care of all this crap when my dad was around, so it's not new to her in the least. It's just now... she's older. In the car, I told her that if I have to be in control of the bills and the banking, then it is going to have to be MY way. "I just thought I'd save you time," she explained. Taking her to the bank, I explained to her, AND the currency does not save me time. An online bank account, on the other hand, would help. "Oh, that just confuses me," she answered.

"Really," I asked, "confuses you more than when you were in the bank and the currency exchange? Were all those maneuvers time saving and clear to you? Crystal clear?"

We're working on setting up an online checking account, if Bank of Amerika has those...

The Magnificence

I awoke to the sound of various birdsong, and one in particular rang above the rest. I looked out my bedroom window to see a cardinal perched upon a branch of a budding maple, a small slash of bright red amid a sprinkling of deeper red-orange against the palest blue sky. He sat facing east, singing up the sun. A crying seagull joined in the chorus. I was overwhelmed with a feeling of joy and contentment. Do all days begin this way? Is this gift offered each and every day? Are all mornings this lovely? I think of how many I have missed, how much of the Magnificence I have slept through, the cyclic assembling and quaking of the pure and the perfect, with things yet to unfold. At this fleeting moment, through this tiny window in time, how rich in perfection is the world. I should get up at sunrise more often.

It's so wonderful, even though they are no longer in the wild, butt hey are cared for, living, breathing, and have their pride and their land.
He was HUGE. And FIERCE-looking. Sitting atop the cross bar of my swing, just looking around. I stepped into the sun room and stopped dead in my tracks upon seeing him through the large window, he was that formidable. I was able to take a lousy picture of him from my office window, and as I went back to the sun room, as I lifted my camera, he flew away. HUGE wings. He was regal.

He looked like this fella here:

Here is a photo for scale:

I hope he comes back, but that means he's aiming to kill something. I never saw a falcon up close and personal like that. I think if I were outside and that thing flew overhead or landed nearby, I'd take off running before he got a chance to peck out my liver. Fierce beauty.

Things are going well. People are signing up, here and there, and I am going to be quite busy for a few months.

I am grateful for the business I have. In this economy, in the climate of fear and doubt and holding tight the purse strings, I have to say I am grateful for being kept afloat by people who desire to write and need some guidance.
Won't Get Fooled Again and a new president

WIth the ushering in of a new president and the highly anticipated changes to come, I found myself listening to the lyrics of this song with much more intensity. I felt like I grew up, like this song had to do with the history I"m living in right at this moment. That's what makes a song a classic; it remains relevant over the years.

Won't Get Fooled Again, by The Who

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
