The rooftop was bitter cold; she could see his breath as he stood in the shadows. His shoulders were hunched over as he looked across the rooftops to the drug deal going on across the street. “Don’t you think we should break that up?” Huntress asked stepping silently besides Nightwing, her long coat actually buttoned up part of the way for warmth.

“Hi Helena,” he said, as he made a mental note of who was who. “No, I need to wait. Want to find out who the big boss is. There’s always a new rat to take over for the last one. Something I learned from the old man a long time ago.”

“Yeah, Barbara keeps telling me that how it works too.” She hunkered down next to him, to keep out of site. As usual she wore no mask to hide her face, preferring her prey to remember the person who took them down. She could see the look of disapproval in Dick Grayson’s blue eyes, just like she did Oracle’s every night when she went on patrol. “She spent too much time with him after you left.”

“I know,” he said the bitterness still in his voice that Barbara’s life had been ruined by Batman’s failure to stop the Joker. “So why are you in Bludhaven, Huntress?”

“Needed a change of scenery,” she said with a smirk and a shrug. Being so close to him made her heart race. She was so glad he didn’t have her meta-human hearing, and had no idea of the effect he had on her.

“You and Oracle have a fight?”

“Something like that. She and I had a disagreement on the new girl. We have a lot of those. You should come by and visit.” That way I can see if you still love her, and if she still loves you. “I know she’d love to see you. Someone who agrees with her about the whole secret identity thing.”

“Barbara and I don’t always agree, Helena,” he said standing up as the last of the thugs went back into the building. “But I should probably come see her. It’s been a long time.”

“Over a year, Boy Wonder.” Her eyes shifted focus, as she shifted their range of vision until she could see as well as a cat. “Nightwing, don’t you think it’s kind of stupid for a bad guy to be making with the drug deals on a rooftop? This kind of feels like a trap to me.”

As the last words left her lips, a shot rang out grazing Nightwing’s shoulder, and sending the pair of them tumbling back into the deeper shadows and safety. She’d landed on top of him, her short bobbed hair falling across her face. All she wanted to do was kiss him, just once. Was there really any harm in that?

“Helena,” an exasperated sigh came along with her name. It was also delivered in the perfect school teacher/mother you’re being bad voice that she stopped pacing in mid step. “Please stop pacing you’re going to wear a hole in the tiles.”

Drawing to a stop, the tall dark haired young woman leaned against the wall with her arms folded across her chest, her cropped dark hair falling across her topaz blue eyes. “But I can’t sit still. There’s got to be something we can do. Something I can do. I can do so much,” she trudged towards Barbara Gordon before slumping into the waiting room chair next to her best friend and mentor. Barbara’s eyes were haunted and red rimmed. She’d been crying off and on all week, and Helena could see she’d bitten off her fingernails almost short enough for her fingers to bleed. “I hate this.”

Death was something that came quick in Huntress’ world. She’d watched her mother’s life snatched away in a blink of an eye. Watched so many others lives snuffed out by the villains and criminals of New Gotham that she wasn’t emotionally prepared to deal with a long suffering lingering death like the one Jim Gordon was going through right now. Every time she thought of the kind, gentle grey haired man with his thick glasses who had been so much of a father to her when her own had deserted her that it made her chest hurt.

“I hate it too, but there’s nothing we can do.” Reaching out, Barbara took Helena’s hand, and pulled her into her arms where the two shared yet another cry.

“All the money, all the research and it’s been for nothing.” Huntress felt her anger rising above the sorrow, a familiar defense mechanism, as she pulled away from Barbara to stalk across the room again where she slammed her fist into the wall, leaving a dimple in the dry wall. “Wayne Tech can’t help. Wayne Medical can’t help. God can’t even help. I’d kill someone if it would save him Babs. You know I would.”

“I know honey. But he wouldn’t let you.”

“Neither would you.”

“No probably not.”

Barbara and Helena turned towards the doctor who had come through the doors of intensive care. The man didn’t look like he was even wired so that he could smile. The dread filled the waiting room like a clinging fog.

Huntress watched from the shadows as the large caped figure of her father sprang from the spire of the New Gotham Cathedral, and glided towards the shadows of the inner city. She felt her muscles tense, and forced herself to relax. This was a game of tag; she never expected to be able to play. She was the Huntress, and the Batman was her prey. Years of betrayal and rage fueled the fire in her gut, making her gnash her teeth at the very sight of the Caped Crusader.

*****************************

He was supposed to be her father. He was supposed to love her and take care of her now that her mother was dead and buried. But he had failed her again and again. She’d started out towing the line, doing everything she could to be the perfect little girl even though her heart had been torn out and left bleeding in the gutter next to the murder weapon. He’d been unable to be a father to her then when she’d been so wracked with grief that she’d started stealing things just to feel alive, just to get his attention.

Then came the night when he’d gone into his study, and she’d never seen him leave from her perch on the stairs. He and his “son” Dick Grayson had been in there for hours, and she’d watched until Alfred opened the doors. She hadn’t been able to see neither her father nor Dick, and after a good long wait Alfred seemed to have been swallowed up by the room too. She’d finally given up, walking on cat silent feet through the aging manor, and popped open the locked door with a quick twist of a hairpin, just like Selina had taught her. The study was empty.

She looked around, picking up this and that, then investigated the piano. It was old and sounded out of tune. She could see fingerprints on a few of the keys more than others, and picked out the tune they played. It was then she got the surprise of her life when a door opened behind the grandfather clock. Curiosity was something bred into her from both of her parents; only back then she only thought it was the cat parts of her, so she quickly made her way down the twisting stairs deep under Wayne Manor.

The sounds of the water fall mingled with the cries of bats made her even more curious as she padded along silently. She could see lights down below, and hear the sound of voices, including her father’s. “You bastard!” she screamed at him from the darkness when she saw the fall of his long black cape, the gloved hands and the cowl covering his head. She leapt from the top of the steps, throwing herself at her father, her hands pounding on his armor covered chest. He didn’t try to stop her. He just let her beat on him until she was out of breath. “You’re the fucking Batman, and you let my mother die! I hate you! I hate you!”

**********************

“Hi dad,” she purred as she stepped up behind him. She wondered if he could smell the poison she’d gotten from Cheshire under her nails. Would he let her get close enough to scratch him? It would only take one good scratch. Cheshire had promised that all she had to do was draw blood. What would the mercenary have thought if she’d known that Huntress was going to do it to kill her father? He hadn’t let her get this close since that time in the cave, so very long ago. “So looks like we’re going to have to share New Gotham. Do you want to flip a coin over who gets which neighborhoods?”

It had been another long night, but then they always were. I leapt from the top of the Wayne Enterprises building, and raced across the rooftops trying to beat the first rays of dawn to the Clocktower where I knew Babs was waiting with the morning breeze blowing through that incredible red hair, and hopefully breakfast. I’d had a long night thwarting the bad guys of New Gotham, and I was hungry. Mickey D’s aren’t open at 4am when all you really wanted was an egg mcmuffin, and you should see the looks I get when I go into 7-11 when I get the munchies after midnight. I used to try to carry food with me, but it just got mashed with all the fights I get into each night. It’s always kind of nice when I catch some punk trying to break into a liquor store or restaurant. The owners are usually so happy that I showed up that they’ll feed me. Yes, I travel on my stomach. It takes a lot of energy to take out the forces of darkness, and I don’t like doing it when my blood sugar is low.

Barbara was already outside when I arrived. Her eyes were closed as she listened to the sounds of the city that she had given up so much to protect. I don’t know how she did it. Sometimes I think she became Oracle, so that she could be a good influence on me. Without her, I know I’d have been on the run from the cops myself by now. Because let’s face it – being bad is more fun than being good – unless you’re a vigilante and get to pound evil’s ass.

I could smell the hot coffee before I got to the widow’s walk that ran along the top of the building. The breeze carried it with the tempting smell of hot cinnamon rolls. “So I guess Alfred was here?” I asked as I dropped down from the railing next to my best friend, sister, and guardian.

“He brought you fresh baked cinnamon rolls,” she said taking a sip of her coffee, and glancing towards the rose colored glow on the horizon. “I made the coffee.”

I settled down cross-legged next to her after stripping off my jacket, and just letting the breeze blow across my face. “You know something?” I asked her as I took my first sip of the coffee, and picked a section of the first ring off the cinnamon roll. “This is my favorite time of day.”

I've become the Huntress for theatrical_muse which is pretty damned cool. Each week a challenge is sent out, and you have to write a ficlet about your Muse. Not much of a challenge for me, since we know how I feel about Helena Kyle. I've also requested Sawyer from Lost, and might ask for Lindsey from Angel in the future. This is to last week's challenge, but I figured why not back track a bit.
