History
[change | change source]The first small villages in the area were Arraial do Dourado and Caperenga. They started to grow bigger around 1885 because of salt production (called salinas in Portuguese). The municipality became independent in 1962. Before that, it was part of the city of Itaparica.
Economy
[change | change source]In the past, making salt from sea water was very important. Today, the most important economic activity is fishing and gathering seafood, especially by local women called marisqueiras. Tourism is also important because the town has beautiful beaches along the All Saints' Bay (Baía de Todos os Santos).
