Sallaumines is a town and commune (the smallest kind of local government area in France) in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France. About 9,600 people live there.[1] The people who live in the town are called Sallauminois.[1]
Sallaumines is a suburb of the city of Lens, which means it is a smaller town right next to a bigger one. It sits only about 3 kilometres (2 miles) from the centre of Lens.[1]
History
[change | change source]Sallaumines grew quickly because of coal mining. It is part of the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin, a large coal-mining area that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (a place kept safe because it matters to the whole world).[2]
For many years, coal mines gave work to most of the people in the town. The town was at its biggest in the 1960s, with almost 15,000 people in 1968. After the mines closed, many jobs were lost, and the number of people slowly went down.[3]
Geography
[change | change source]Sallaumines covers about 3.8 square kilometres (1.5 square miles).[3] The land is low and flat. Its height above sea level goes from about 27 metres (89 feet) to 54 metres (177 feet).[3] Because many people live in a small area, the town is quite crowded for its size.[1]
