Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

A few days ago I was about to switch to Windows just for the Xbox app and Gears of War series, but...
Pretty soon, we'll finally be able to play Xbox App PC games on Linux, a developer from the Heroic Games Launcher team, is actively working on a new project called Xodus.

https://github.com/xodus-gaming

The team has already achieved some incredible milestones with the Xodus core. Right now, the software is fully capable of handling user authentication and device logins using official Microsoft credentials. It can successfully exchange security tokens, communicate with the Xbox Live network, and acquire valid game licenses. On top of that, it can already parse MSIXVC game packages, handle on-demand executable decryption, and fully download the game files directly to storage.

The goal is to bring Xbox PC games over and integrate them directly into Heroic, which is the app we already use to manage GOG, Epic Games, and Amazon libraries. They’re making massive progress and are getting really close.
Honestly, the lack of games from the official Microsoft store was pretty much the last major roadblock keeping people on Windows 11 X64 PRO 🤣 Crap Bloatware-Spyware Stupid AI.

The way they're pulling this off with Xodus is honestly wild. Instead of just making a basic wrapper, they are reverse-engineering Microsoft's closed system from scratch. They've already figured out how to safely connect to Xbox servers to handle logins, verify official licenses, and download the game packages. The real heavy lifting right now is building an open-source version of Microsoft’s background system files, specifically xgameruntime.dll. This tricks the games into thinking they are running on a regular Windows Xbox app, when in reality, a custom compatibility layer is handling everything natively on Linux.

hey , if you dont mind can you give us a review if you plan to use it:steamhappy:
Right now, it's not available for regular users yet. They will release it for everyone once it's ready, the project only started in June and they've already made a ton of progress.

Microsoft could have easily made an official linux app. I get that the Xbox app is tied to Windows, but this way Linux users could have actually bought their games instead of keeping the app locked exclusively to Windows.
It's the exact same bullsh!t they did when they encrypted games and locked them inside UWP like Gears of War 4, only to backpedal later when they realized they were losing users.
They would have expanded their user base and boosted their profits, but they're so stupid they don't realize they're just shooting themselves in the foot. So now, someone else is going to build the app for us, lol.

It will take patience, probably many months before seeing the first stable builds to play games, but the road is mapped out and they will succeed. The hardest part is already overcome.
Microsoft's security and authentication systems are usually the highest walls to climb but they have already succeeded, the games that instead are unfortunately encrypted inside UWP, but they are really few, will not be able to work, the Xodus developers have already said that it is not worth wasting time with those games that even Microsoft has abandoned.
The xgameruntime.dll library is documented, now they have to rewrite this component in an open source version and it is a long job, but not impossible. Many functions and system calls that games make to this library are known, they can be intercepted and replicated. It will be like having a native Xbox app integrated inside Heroic Games Launcher.

I like the name. :D
I asked myself a question, how many Linux users actually play games? Around 4 or 5%? These small numbers mean millions of players. Imagine if Microslop had released a native Xbox app crap for Linux, how many Game pass and games would they have sold? A lot, but the point is that they want to control their winzozz users to the bone, which is something they can't do with us Linux users. That's why they refused Gabe Newell's offer in 2022 when he proposed bringing Game Pass to Steam. And since it wasn't offered to us, we will take it in other ways....

LOL
What's a "Linux user"? Linux is 99% of servers. Someone owns those, someone administrates them. It's hard to assign a user entity to that. If we restrict this to only desktop users, then you have to ask yourself - how many of those CAN play games rather than DO play games. It doesn't only run on AMD64 systems with capable GPUs. If you restrict it even further to only AMD64 systems with GPUs running desktop Linux, then around 20%.
