given what they have done to the game mods themselves?
- deleted ones that they think are problematic for basic things - like changing character looks

people are worried that they will no longer be accurate or reliable, promoting games that dont actuallly reflect player numbers correctly or not reflecting the reasons they are failing correctly, attempt to turn it into a money spinner, allow devs to inflate the success of a game through botted/falsified information amongst other things

Yeah, that's exactly why i asked. Duh. From what i see so far, SteamDB it's going to be separate, existing free features will likely remain the same, one of the mains reason (along with others one) was because they need people/resources to maintain the website.

Obviously no one knows what will happen in the future. We're just speculating at this point.

And when some company doesn't like what people are saying about their game's performance, they can just send a "donation" to Nexus, and the "problematic" reviews will suddenly just disappear.

That's exactly how it works. Nexus Mods has already proven that with their activism on their own website. They have already proven that they will act hypocritical when it suites them. They have already proven that they will claim to be neutral as an excuse to allow controversial mods, then turn around and remove mods that conflict with their own points of view.

The fact that they have already done this, and more, on top of their demands for ProtonDB to be "profitable" perfectly proves that they will do it without a second thought.

Nexus just bought it. They can delete any reviews they want.

The mods on Nexus are also uploaded by users, and Nexus deleted any mods they disagreed with as well.

This is common knowledge at this point.

As someone a bit out of the loop, what's bad about this?

Haven't used Nexus mods in well over a decade (I think it was Nexus mods at least) and I don't know anything about them anymore apart from the obvious (that it's a site where you can download mods).

Nexus mods is known for being hypocritical and deleting user content that they disagree with while protecting similar content that shares their own POV. Nexus mods said that they will find a way to monetize SteamDB as well.

These leads to obvious concerns about the accuracy, reliability, and independence of ProtonDB moving forward.
