Xbox Controller Support / Flickering / Issue Fix
After going thru countless forums and youtube videos, this is what i came to fix the issue.
If you want to play with a controller, right click the game for space engineers, click properties, scroll down to controllers - disable - open steam overlay and everything can be un-clicked except for xbox feature / support and make sure the controller is identified.

*** Then restart your PC ***

*** My main issue was when i plugged my controller in, it was flickering or "fighting" with my keyboard and mouse to maintain an overlay ***

and here 2 years later i'm having the same issue only way i found to fix it is to restart my computer every time i want to play hope it helps someone or someone helps me

Hi, Xbox controller users already shared solutions that I have added in the Pin of Troubleshooting sub Forum.

Note

We lock +3 months old discussions because the game is not the same after a update where old disscussions may contain false information, discussions that don't have any activity so no new posts since 3 months. also to avoid community reports about "Necroing old" and it is in the forum rules added to pinned green messages.

Never be shy to create a new forum discussion, one problem at a time so all can help on one player per discussions that matches the game version.
