Thanks to CC for beta-reading this.
Renji is asleep. Even in his sleep, though, his body is outstretched, as if he is still rushing towards somewhere. Red hair is spread on the pillow, falling freely from his brow, covering parts of the black tattoos.
Byakuya lies on his side, watching him. He is sleepy too, his body full of warm lassitude, but he doesn’t let himself close his eyes. The house is so quiet that he can hear leaves whispering in the garden when the wind blows just a bit stronger. These moments of quietness are much rarer now, the old Kuchiki house too often full of voices, sharp and loud and noisy like waterfalls tumbling onto stones where only quiet streams ran before. Byakuya doesn’t mind; it’s just that he needs quietness sometimes.
And he likes watching a quiet Renji. It’s difficult to catch Renji being quiet: these moments just after he falls asleep are really the best. He isn’t going to awaken now; Byakuya knows that by the even rhythm of his breathing. His fukutaichou had already grumbled something about some people who don’t know how to cuddle properly, and messed up the pillow to his satisfaction, and yawned hugely. Now he sleeps, and Byakuya can reach out and trace the black patterns on his bare arm, and smile to himself, seeing Renji’s nose twitch a little.
Renji moves his head slightly — he can’t stay still even asleep — and a strand of red hair falls onto Byakuya’s hand. Byakuya pauses, knowing that if he moves it will fall back on the pillow, holding on to this sensation until his whole being seems to focus on that one place on his right hand where Renji’s hair touches his skin. It’s not as rough as he supposed it to be once; but then, many things about Renji are not as rough as they seem.
He is a tiger, Byakuya thinks suddenly. A red, black-striped tiger; wild, dangerous… and fluffy. My own tiger, he thinks, smiling, and closes his eyes.
Byakuya sleeps. He dreams of an old book that, as a child, he carried to his room from the family library. A book of legends, with a great big colored picture on the first page: a red, red tiger coming out of the dark green of the forest. The brightest thing he ever had in his room.
