“Must you pull the hair of every girl you meet?”
Ukitake’s voice is full of tired resignation; lately it’s been sounding like this much too often. Kyoraku doesn’t like it; that’s why he answers with double the usual dose of cheerfulness. “Of course I must, Juu-chan! After all, I can’t miss appreciating all these beautiful creatures around me, and hair, especially long hair, is really one of the more enchanting features of a true beauty.” He lifts his eyes to the sky and sighs appreciatively. That makes Ukitake laugh, as he expected, but his friend still reprimands him.
“They are getting annoyed, you know. Have you seen Unohana lately? She started to braid her hair under her chin, just to keep it away from you! If you go on like this, you might well make most of the others to get haircuts, and what will you appreciate then?”
Ukitake is still laughing, though, and Kyoraku grins, watching the animation on his face. “Well,” he answers, “none of this would matter if the one whose hair I appreciate the most would grow it a bit longer. Then I wouldn’t need to pull anyone else’s, naturally,” he adds, winking.

Ukitake Juushirou does grow out his hair. However, Unohana Retsu still braids hers under her chin; the medics from the Fourth division swear she keeps small instruments in it.
