- The simplest way to move BTC into HNT without an exchange account is an instant swap, and ChangeNOW is the one we'd use: it tracks the order live and reports about a minute of processing on its side.
- HNT now lives on Solana, so the payout needs a Solana address, ideally from the official Helium Wallet or another Solana wallet you control.
- Bitcoin takes up most of the waiting time. The HNT side settles in seconds.
- Planning to move the HNT afterwards? Keep a little SOL in the same wallet for network fees.
If you're working out how to transfer BTC to HNT, the first thing to know is that there's no direct bridge between the two chains. Bitcoin runs on its own network, while HNT, the token that rewards people for running Helium wireless hotspots and gets burned as the network carries data, has lived on Solana since April 2023. In practice, "transferring" BTC to HNT means selling one and buying the other, either through an exchange service or across a couple of hops on Solana itself.

How Long Does a BTC to HNT Transaction Take?
A typical BTC to HNT swap finishes in about 10 to 30 minutes. Almost all of that is the Bitcoin deposit waiting for confirmation.
The order moves through three stages, and each runs at a very different speed:
- Your Bitcoin deposit has to confirm. A new block arrives roughly every ten minutes on average, and a swap service won't start until your transaction is in one. Some wait for a single confirmation, others for two or three on larger amounts, which is what stretches an order towards half an hour.
- The service then converts BTC to HNT. This is the short part, usually measured in a minute or two.
- HNT is paid out on Solana, which produces blocks every few hundred milliseconds. According to Anza's documentation on commitment levels, a transaction counts as confirmed once validators holding two-thirds of the stake have voted on its block, and becomes final after 31 more confirmed blocks are added on top. For you, that means the HNT shows up within seconds of being sent.
How Can You Track a BTC to HNT Exchange?
With three tools, and you'll probably use all of them on your first swap.
The order page is the main one. ChangeNOW supports crypto swaps across 110 blockchains, and users can start a Bitcoin to HNT exchange with real-time transaction tracking. The page shows whether the service is still waiting for your deposit, confirming it, exchanging or sending the payout, so you always know which side of the trade you're waiting on.
A Bitcoin block explorer covers the deposit. Paste the transaction ID from your wallet into any public explorer, and you'll see whether the payment is still in the mempool, how many confirmations it has and what fee you paid. If the order page says "waiting for deposit" and the explorer shows zero confirmations, the delay is on the Bitcoin network, not the service.
A Solana explorer such as Solscan or the official Solana Explorer covers the payout. Once the service sends HNT, it gives you a transaction signature. Looking it up shows the amount, the receiving address and the token's mint address, which should read hntyVP6YFm1Hg25TN9WGLqM12b8TQmcknKrdu1oxWux. If any of those don't match, contact support before doing anything else.
What Can Delay a BTC to HNT Transaction?
Most delays trace back to one of a handful of causes, and only the last two have anything to do with Solana.
- A Bitcoin fee set too low. When the mempool is busy, a cheap transaction can wait for hours while miners pick better-paying ones. Wallets that support Replace-by-Fee let you bump it; otherwise you wait.
- Sending from an exchange account. Many exchanges batch their withdrawals or hold them for internal review, so the BTC may not even leave the exchange for a while. The swap clock only starts once the coins hit the deposit address.
- An amount that doesn't match the order. Sending less than the minimum, or a different figure on a fixed-rate order, usually pushes the swap into manual handling.
- A compliance review, which pauses the order until support has the information it needs.
- A wrong or unsuitable payout address. HNT has to go to a Solana address. An address from another network is usually rejected by the order form, but a typo in a valid-looking Solana address won't, so compare the first and last characters before confirming.
- Solana congestion. It's uncommon, but during heavy traffic spikes, such as the memecoin rush of spring 2024, some transactions were dropped and had to be resent. Services retry automatically, so this usually adds only a few minutes.
An order that has sat for more than an hour with the deposit already confirmed is worth raising with support. Quote the order ID, and they can see exactly where it stopped.
Can You Exchange BTC to HNT Without Creating an Account?
Yes. Instant swap services take a one-off order: you enter the amount, paste a Solana address for the HNT and send BTC to the deposit address they generate. There's no sign-up, no password and no balance kept on the platform.
The one thing you do need is a wallet that can hold HNT on Solana. The obvious choice is the official Helium Wallet app, which creates accounts with a 24-word seed phrase and shows HNT and SOL balances side by side. Any standard Solana wallet works as well, Phantom and Solflare included, and the Helium app lets you export a private key into one of them if you change your mind later.
If you keep coins on a Ledger, HNT is handled by the device's Solana app. Older versions of Ledger Live didn't display Helium's tokens at all, so pairing the Ledger with the Helium Wallet or another Solana wallet is the dependable way to see and move them.
Skipping the account doesn't mean skipping checks, though, and an account-free order can still be reviewed.
When Can Compliance Checks Apply to a BTC to HNT Exchange?
Whenever the service's anti-money laundering monitoring flags the order. A business that swaps one cryptocurrency for another for customers is a virtual asset service provider under the FATF guidance on virtual assets, so a crypto-to-crypto trade carries the same duty to screen as one involving bank money.
Bitcoin makes that screening fairly thorough. Every deposit has a public history, and blockchain analytics tools can trace where the coins came from several hops back. The orders that get a closer look tend to share a few features:
- coins that passed through a mixer, a hacked service or an address on a sanctions list;
- an amount much larger than the platform usually sees from a new customer;
- a run of orders that looks like one large sum broken into pieces;
- a user connecting from a country where the service has extra obligations.
If a review starts, the order pauses and support gets in touch, often asking where the funds came from and sometimes for ID. The swap then either goes ahead or the BTC is returned to your refund address.
You can make a review less likely, and shorter if it happens. Send from a wallet you control with a clean history, give a refund address, and avoid splitting a large purchase into many small ones.
How Do BTC to HNT Services Compare?
Three routes get you from BTC to HNT, and they trade convenience against control in different ways.
| Route | Account | Steps | Who holds the funds | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant swap service | Not required; compliance checks may apply | One order: deposit BTC, receive HNT | The service, for that order only | Rate includes the service's margin |
| Centralized exchange | Required, with identity verification | Deposit BTC, sell it, buy HNT, withdraw to Solana | The exchange, until you withdraw | HNT often trades against USDT, so it can take two trades |
| Solana DEX | None | Bridge BTC to Solana as a wrapped token, buy SOL for fees, swap on an aggregator such as Jupiter | You, throughout | Bridge risk, more steps, SOL needed from the start |
For a one-off transfer from a personal Bitcoin wallet, the instant swap is the shortest path. It's the only route here where you send native BTC and receive HNT in a single step.
A centralized exchange makes sense if you already keep an account there and plan to trade HNT actively. Helium's own HNT page names Coinbase and Kraken among the places that carry the token, though availability varies by country. When you withdraw, pick the Solana network.
The DEX route suits people already active on Solana, and that ecosystem is a big part of why Helium moved there: the Solana Foundation's technical case study of Helium gives as much weight to the chain's developer tools and composability as to its speed. The Helium Wallet's built-in browser can open Jupiter directly, but you'll need a bridged version of Bitcoin first, and every bridge adds a smart-contract risk that native BTC doesn't carry.
How Does ChangeNOW Provide Real-Time Tracking?
Every order gets its own ID and a status page that refreshes on its own, so there's no need to keep reloading an explorer or wait for an email.
The page also links the two on-chain transactions behind the order: the incoming Bitcoin payment and the outgoing Solana transfer. Once HNT has gone out, the payout hash proves it even before your wallet refreshes, which helps if you ever need to show support, or the person you're paying, that the coins were sent.
On timing, ChangeNOW reports an average standard exchange time of about one minute for its part of the process. You can choose a floating or a fixed rate when you create the order, and the tracker works the same way for both.
The order ID is also what support asks for first. ChangeNOW has been running since 2017, handles more than 50,000 exchanges a day by its own count and keeps support available 24/7, so a stuck order can be looked at whatever your time zone.
FAQ
Can I still use my old Helium wallet address?
Not as it was. The original Helium blockchain was retired in the April 2023 migration, and wallets were carried over to Solana. Helium keys map directly to Solana keys, so if you open the Helium Wallet app with your existing seed phrase, it shows the matching Solana address. That's the one to paste into a swap order.
Do I pay anything to receive HNT?
Not on top of the swap. The service pays the Solana network fee for sending the payout, and that fee is a tiny fraction of a cent. Costs only start to matter when you move HNT yourself, which is when you need SOL in the wallet.
The swap says it's finished, but I can't see the HNT. What now?
Look up the payout hash in a Solana explorer. If it shows HNT arriving at your address, the coins are there and your wallet just isn't displaying them. Some wallets only list a token after you add it by its mint address, while the Helium Wallet shows HNT automatically.
