Lily lay on the double bed in the middle of the, admittedly small, hotel room she had been smuggled into with her family in tow. For 4 days she had been Petunia Underhill; a blonde, blue eyed woman with her unremarkable husband and son. The sigh she had been about to emit died in her throat as Harry grabbed onto her finger and squeezed. A smile blossomed on her face and she rubbed her nose against her beaming son’s in an Eskimo kiss. Lily could, honestly, sit and stare at her son all day. This moment of intimacy was broken when an owl flew through the window and hopped onto the bed with them. Lily glanced at James and sat up, pulling Harry into her lap as she propped herself up against the pillows.
She hoped against hope that it was Dumbledore saying they could drop the act and go home.
She was slightly alarmed, however, when another owl flew through the window and joined the other at the foot of her bed. The alarming thing about this owl, however, was not so much its appearance in the bedroom but more the stuffed dragon toy it was carrying.
Harry instantly struggled against his mother’s grip in a bid to get his favourite cuddly toy. Lily plucked it from the owl’s grip and Harry released a happy gurgle as he latched onto the tail. The letter, from Alice, brought another round of tears to Lily’s eyes and she quickly moved on to the first owl, who looked quite disgruntled at having to wait its turn. Reading through the letter, Lily fought the first of her emotions; disappointment that it wasn’t Dumbledore saying they could leave Ireland and get back to their own bed and focused on the fact that Mary was having a baby.
“Mary’s having a baby.” Lily told James, willing enthusiasm that just wasn’t there into her voice and passing him the parchment. “The other owl is from Alice she...err..." 'Now or never, Evans' "she owled me earlier and I replied. I know I probably shouldn’t have but she sounded really worried.” Lily confessed, feeling guilty that she hadn’t just told James about it earlier. It wasn’t like he wouldn’t understand but, being cooped up in the same room for days on end, was starting to frazzle her. She needed fresh air, a chance to take a walk in the park with her family, before she went completely crazy. The owls remained still, staring at her as if waiting for a response.
Lily closed her eyes and leant back to escape their golden, beady stares and Harry lay down on her chest, dragon toy clutched to his protectively as his mother’s steady breathing lulled him into drowsiness.
