Deputy Interior Ministers Tackle Land Encroachment at Phuket’s Freedom Beach

Phuket

On Wednesday (June 17th) deputy Interior Ministers Polpee Suwanchawee and Warasit Liangprasert led a high-level delegation to Freedom Beach in Kathu, to investigate allegations of land encroachment and unauthorized claims of ownership.

The delegation included senior officials such as Chaiwat Juntiraphong, Secretary to the Interior Minister, Nirun Pongsitthithavorn, Phuket Governor, and senior representatives from the Department of Provincial Administration and the Department of Lands.

Polpee stated that the inspection was necessary to verify reports of locals charging access fees to the beach and claiming possession of land documents (Nor Sor 3). “From the information we received, this area belongs to the state, divided between the Royal Forest Department and the Agricultural Land Reform Office. It is impossible for Nor Sor 3 titles to be issued here. Any claims of ownership must be thoroughly investigated by the Department of Lands,” he stated.

He further relayed Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s directive: “Every detail must be examined carefully. What is legal must be recognized, and what is unlawful must face consequences. We will ensure Phuket’s safety, suppress local influential figures, and act swiftly against intimidation or illegal profiteering.”

Polpee reassured residents that government intervention is not meant to disrupt livelihoods but to protect them. “We promise Phuket will thrive through its own people. If businesses operate legally, without extortion or exploitation, the state will fully support them to improve quality of life and community well-being,” he said.

Warasit added that the ministry will closely monitor progress to guarantee that Freedom Beach and other public areas are reclaimed and properly regulated. “Our ultimate goal is not only law enforcement but also uplifting community standards so locals can earn a living fairly and safely. At the same time, we will dismantle networks of influential groups demanding illegal benefits, restoring peace and confidence for both residents and tourists,” he affirmed.
