Desperate Effort
They were losing. Ed didn't care what anyone said about buying time for this Frodo person to throw a magic ring into an evil volcano. The men of Minas Tirith and Rohan were losing, and if they all got killed, then what the hell good did a diversionary tactic do?

He had tried to hold back during the battle, tried to reserve his strength for the task of staying alive, but as hope faded in the eyes of the men around him, Ed found it difficult to resist the urge to use alchemy. He could buy them so much time with just one transmutation--one massive transmutation. A wall across the battlefield, or a chasm ... a fire, maybe, if he felt like stealing from Colonel Mustang's bag of tricks. Ed knew he could do it, but at what cost?

At worst, he reflected as he drove his automail blade into an orc's gut, he would be noticed and taken by Sauron. At best, he might wake up after a long nap to discover the battle was done and the Dark Lord defeated. The middle ground, and the most likely outcome, was that he would be killed, the energy needed for the transmutation drawn out of him like fast-burning gasoline until there was nothing left to make his heart beat, his lungs expand.

In two of those three scenarios, he would never make it home to Al.

The alchemist ducked a swipe from a mountain troll and grimaced. He would never make it home to Al if his head got taken off by the enemy, either. A sinkhole suddenly opened beneath the troll's feet, just inches from where Ed had slammed his palms flat against the ground. Sweat ran into his eyes as he shook off the lightheadedness caused by his most recent transmutation. If he intended to do something drastic, he had better do it soon, before the small efforts chipped away too much of his energy.

Ed drove his automail blade through the troll's thick neck, doing his best to ignore the blood and the choked sounds the creature made as it died.

Wall, chasm, conflagration? The boy had trouble deciding. If he screwed this up, the rest of the army would have a hard time rectifying his mistake.

He supposed it wouldn't hurt to blow up a few of the orcs still crowding through that massive gate set in the mountains. There was no telling how much force he could muster, but he might be able to whittle the odds down, something more like a hundred to one than a thousand. Ed spent only a moment working out the mechanics of his plan before he struck a spark with his automail and called on alchemy to give it greater life. It really was wonderful how rearranging just a few tiny particles made things go boom.

Mustang's going to be furious if he ever hears about how I just upstaged him, Ed thought wryly as he collapsed, darkness already blanketing his consciousness. A few hundred orcs and part of the Black Gate fell with him.

Leaving the Houses
[Note: Takes place the day Aragorn's forces leave for Mordor.]

The poor apprentice who had been assigned to check on Edward that morning hurried from the room, calling for Ioreth. Behind the door, the alchemist shook his head and pulled on his customary black tank top. The motion pulled uncomfortably at the wound in his shoulder, but he was long used to pain and largely ignored it.

In rest...
For all of the long, hard battle the two of them had remained back to back. They had not escaped unwounded. Anduinel was bruised and gashed, Findekano was nursing a broken arm and battered ribs. It could have been so much worse, however.
They had stayed wordlessly side by side as the healers tended them, then Anduinel had lead his shaken and pale companion out to the gardens and the warmth of the sun. They were in each other's arms now, resting on the grass.

"You did well," Anduinel finally managed.

Remembering the Dead I
Sometimes you just want to forget.

Perched on a stone wall in the city like a much younger man, Christopher recalled the elf in the garden. Another death, another tragedy. They were victorious, but death marked all of them. Orc stragglers were hunted, like those Axis transport planes whose bellies had spilled into the Mediterranean.

Yet even with Gondor glutted on victory, he thought, they must be sober at the thought of further desperate war. But they had to fight, of course. Even elves became warriors, at the last. He'd watched one.

Rumor Mills and Short Kids
Glorfindel had finally gotten some rest after seeing to Mahtan's last rites (he almost snorted at the term, for very few things ever truly ended when elves were concerned), and now that he felt somewhat more alert, he made himself useful amongst the patients. He paused at Ed's bedside to check on the boy, and when he found nothing changed, moved on to another patient in need of clean bandages and soothing tea.

There was an undercurrent of gossip running through the Houses, which Ioreth was happily both encouraging and contributing to; she'd been there, after all, and she hadn't had a rumour she was this eager to spread for a good twenty years.

The walk back up the Houses was a long one, but Glorfindel did not mind. He gathered his thoughts as he went, considering how he would tell Ioreth of Arthur's choice. There was no good way to do it, just as there had been no good way to inform Arthur of Tim's fate. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose to ward off a headache born of fatigue and stress.

By the time the elf arrived at the Houses, he still had not found a way to break the news to Ioreth, so he chose to buy himself some time by checking on Ed. The boy was still unconscious, pale but looking better now that most of the blood had been washed a way.

Arthur vs. The Universe
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination. - The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy

Aftermath
Automail was heavy. Glorfindel now knew this intimately, because he was doing his best to haul a few hundred pounds of steel and sixteen-year-old boy from the battered First Circle of the city to the Houses of Healing. He idly wondered how Ed managed every day, letting the relatively harmless speculation override his other thoughts and feelings for the time being. He would rather not think about the cost of victory at present.

Arthur had lost count of how many hours he'd been awake long ago - it might have been a day, a week, a month for all he knew. His world had narrowed down to one patient at a time. Some he could help, others died during treatment. He hadn't grown callous to death, but he had become somewhat numb, noting each passing with a few precious seconds spent acknowledging the life of a stranger. Even though he didn't know most of them by name, each had given his all to help save the city, to help save Gondor. And still more came, they kept coming, and Arthur wondered if the Houses would soon burst from the load. The clatter in the hallway signaled more arrivals. Arthur squinted his eyes and rubbed them, willing himself to keep going a while more. It was always just a little while more, he told himself.

[Set during the battle on the Pelennor Fields.]

Rohan's horses were panicking. Between the Mumakil and the Nazgul, most of the beasts were convinced that they were going to die. Felarof could hardly blame them ... well, he could hardly blame the ones that weren't directly related to him, which were few and far between. He sighed and plunged into the thick of the mob, lashing out with hooves and teeth at enemies and friends alike. For the enemy, the strikes were lethal. For friends, the strikes were reminders to get their damn acts together and not get their riders killed. It was far better to die on a Mumakil's tusk than to live as a coward.

Uglahk's attack method of choice involved a lot of ducking and dodging and not much actual fighting unless an easy opportunity presented itself. Arthur And His Cunning Plan
Arthur managed well enough during the daytime, when he could keep busy and not dwell on that yet-unseen enemy that drew closer to the city every day. Evenings were tricky business, though. It was difficult to bid farewell to one of the few remaining peaceful days without being able to even watch a decent sunset to mark its passage. Those friends he’d made in Tirith were becoming increasingly difficult to spend evenings with as well, as the talk turned more frequently and with greater urgency towards discussions and planning sessions regarding the coming battles. It seemed to Arthur that almost everyone had witnessed or participated in a war, except for him. He took no comfort in reminding himself that he’d now spent months training as a healer, and that he’d learned to adapt to the old-fashioned sort of lifestyle of those who dwelt on the slopes of a steep mountain, in a white city, in a fantasy world. It wasn't as if he'd been given a choice in the matter.

Arthur speaks with Anduinel
Anduinel slipped out of Fingon's arms at sunrise. The past few days as lovers had been sweetness beyond measure, but the fear in his heart had only grown sharper with each passing hour. If he had feared losing the young Noldo before, the very thought now threatened to cut off his air. He dressed quickly and headed out for the gardens, hoping a bit of green life would settle his mind.

It was quite hard to accomplish a decent Sunday morning lie-in when you suffered from nightmares, and had no clue what the day of the week was. It was too early for morning rounds, but Arthur headed for the Houses anyway - a cup of tea in the garden sounded much more comforting than one brewed alone in his little house.

Arthur stepped outside, and couldn't help quirking a grin. This garden was an elf-magnet. But he didn't recognize this one. Cautiously, Arthur stepped closer. He did want company right now, even if it meant having to make a new friend. "Hello, good morning! I'm Arthur. And you are...?"

The Elf smiled lazily from his sprawl on the grass. Daydreams were grand things for chasing off fears. "Quite content, thank you. My name is Anduinel. Or possibly Thranduil."

Uglahk is having a bad day.
The trick was (once nasty nasty Elves were out of sight) running in what was vaguely the direction of Mordor (Uglahk wasn't deserting, oh no, Uglahk was smarter than that) while still not getting caught up with anybody who was expecting him to do any fighting until well after anything that might bring him into contact with more nasty nasty scary Elves was over and done with.

"Keep moving, Snaga! Don't drag your feet, you worms!"

That had been the idea, at any rate. If it had worked out better, he wouldn't be marching along with a bunch of other Orcs under the leadership of Bugzagh, who if anything was even stupider than Uglahk's previous pig-stink bosses but not the sort of stupid that would let Uglahk sneak away when he wasn't looking.

Bugzagh had kicked him down a hill for being afraid of Elves but would probably piss himself if he'd met the two Uglahk had. Uglahk hadn't mentioned the Scary Boy with Shiny because that would only get him more ridicule and possibly a friendly fist to the head.

They slowed as another troop of Orcs became visible ahead; Uglahk heard something about 'river' and 'cross' and winced.

Now was probably not a good time to mention he was afraid of the water. Maybe he'd just casually slink off to the side here while Bugzagh was talking to...

"Back in line, Snaga!"

Or not.

((The Forces of Evil, oh, and also Uglahk, are on the move. Many are the followers of Sauron; Orcs and Men in the main, but also Trolls and of course the Nine who wait in the shadows for their Lord's command. And as soon as the mods get their acts together, all these dark forces will come crashing down on Minas Tirith with the power of a thousand angstbunnies. Yay!))

Findekano and Anduinel (NC-17)
Pretty much from the moment Findekano had gotten
Anduinel to admit that there was no way they were not going into
battle together, the older Elf had been obsessed with the
Noldo's martial abilities. The early morning hours were spent with
lessons swordsmanship, the relative heat of the noontime on
archery practice, and the evening with staffwork. Anduinel
seemed driven by some demon that would either teach
Findekano enough to keep him safe in battle, or land him in the
Houses.

Findekano did everything that was asked of
him, and he did feel he was progressing, but seemingly
not fast enough for Anduinel. Findekano found it frustrating,
but tried not to let it upset him otherwise. He knew
Anduinel was only like this for his own good.

After the Elves... (slightly smutty)
Remus breathed a sigh of relief when the last of the unwelcome visitors to his room was gone, his bedroom door shut tight to keep them out, leaving him alone. Well, alone with Sirius. Which was practically alone, given that Sirius would undoubtedly leave as well quite soon. Insert Canine Pun Here
Edward Elric had a very, very bad habit. In truth, he had several, but this particular habit was one of the ones that frequently got him in trouble.

Edward Elric liked to snoop around. He didn't do it out of malice, or out of a lack of respect for others (well, maybe a tiny lack of respect), but out of curiosity. When a boy was as brilliant as Edward Elric, and famous for it to boot, snooping just came naturally, like learning or eating or ranting about being called short. Therefore, it should have come as no surprise to anyone who knew Edward that he was snooping around the rather large and empty building that Sirius had led him and the twins to the night before.

Of hobbits and boys...
[Continued from Bergil and the Bush</b>]

The next day after his father had gone to the guardhouse, seeing Bergil back toward the Houses, the young boy went in search of Ioreth or Glorfindel, but found them both busy. Not wanting to interrupt them he wandered out into the garden and ended up sitting cross-legged beside the bush he'd hidden in earlier in the season. A small stick in his hand he poked at the soil, not even aware of the small hole he was making as he tried to think of something, anything he could do that might be of help.

"Whatever it is that's coming, I wish it would just hurry up and get here so we can get it over and get on with everything!" he muttered aloud, frowning as his chin rested on his hand. He hated the scared feelings that were all around, and just wanted it all to go away.

New Tenants
Padfoot sighed heavily as they finally came within sight of the Rohirrim city (he kept thinking it was called Mueslix, but he knew that couldn't be right). It had been a long night, made longer by the fact that he didn't entirely trust the strangers at his back. Still...he couldn't have left a kid alone and on the run from those things that killed Boromir. It was almost dawn. Just enough time to cook the damn hares and fall over.

The Elves, in just the same way, were wary of their guide but mindful of the good it would do Edward finding someplace safe to rest awhile. They hoped the emptied city was, as the skin-changer had promised, safe.

Tim and Arthur: Much-Needed Privacy (NC-17!)
The recruits were being pressed harder as time ran out. Some nights there simply wasn't enough energy left in Gondor's soldiers to make the climb up the Houses for a bit of stew and comfort. Tim always managed. Supplies were getting scarce and the stew wasn't much to speak of anymore; if it got any thinner, it was going to be possible to simply drink down dinner. Tim didn't seem to mind. It was fairly obvious that he was not there for the food. Every evening that he could get away, he did, and he and Arthur always wound up in some unoccupied room, or even in Arthur's little borrowed house, for much-needed privacy.

Mahtan and Gofi talk.
There were less people about the Houses these days, but it seemed that avoiding them was becoming more and more of a problem. There was something about the upcoming war that made many of the young women in the Houses become particularly friendly in a persistant way, and several of them didn't seem to understand the word 'married'. Having found that not even the most hidden corners of the gardens were safe, he decided the best course of action would be to speak to Glorfindel - and hopefully convince him to do something about these girls.

Those born and raised in Arda, and the visitors who desperately try to find their way in these strange lands do not yet know how the story will unfold, or what their place in the re-written legends will be. They cannot escape their destinies, though they are as yet untold.

Those who are left inside the walls of the White City watch and wait, growing more nervous by the day. Denethor's troops train as best they can, spending long hours in the practice yards. The constant tales of the growing madness of the Steward spin stranger and stranger with each passing hour.

Really, the tea was perfectly safe.
[Bad Jen! Forgot to post this. Eh heh heh. Takes place before the elves and Ed meet Sirius.]

Elladan was relieved that his tea had taken so well. It had been hours, now, and Edward had barely stirred. He and Elrohir kept watch, sometimes together and sometimes in turns; at the moment he was on guard, and Elrohir was pacing some distance out from the clearing--ostensibly to gather a few wild plants of medicinal value. Soon they should probably wake Edward, and be moving on, but he was reluctant to disturb that peaceful sleep.

Truth be told, Ed had probably needed the sleep more than he needed the relief from his pain. The drug was wearing off, though, and Ed rolled onto his back, further mussing his hair. He murmured something, dreaming. It sounded suspiciously like, "We can't keep the kitten, Al. Hide it in Mustang's boxers."

Two elves, a kid, and dog...thing
Elrohir scanned ahead while they rode, Elladan doing his best to watch the rear without alerting Edward. He hadn't seen any signs of pursuit, but he doubted he'd relax until they met up with Estel. It had been quiet for some time, but they had left the shelter of the trees and rode through more open lands now; it made both Elves uneasy. The sun had set, too, and twilight had settled into full dark. It was the best time for creatures of ill intent to walk abroad, so when Elrohir spotted a figure at some distance, he was naturally suspicious of it. They slowed their speed, approaching hesitantly--it was alone, whatever (or whoever) it might be, but that did not mean it was wise to come upon it unwary.

A Steward's Demands
Denethor threw the cloth back over the Palantir and glared at it before heading carefully back down the tower, trying to ignore the ache in his legs. So much to do, so little time to do it, and so few he could trust to aid him. And some that might aid him whether he trusted them or not - there was something he'd been putting off doing that needed to be done.

The messenger cowered slightly, while trying to look like he wasn't afraid, and Denethor wondered what the man was guilty of. For why fear your Steward if you were an innocent man? "Go to the Houses. Command the Elf Glorfindel who resides there to come to my chambers. Immediately." This was not a discussion he particularly wished to have in the public arena of the throne room.

Survival Tips
Tonight, the houses were busier than usual in the all-but-empty city. Some of the soldiers had been granted leave to take their meal in the peaceful atmosphere of Ioreth's domain. Many of them were already being seen to by apprentices, young women who had stayed behind for their sweethearts. Glorfindel was occupied ensuring that the rest received their own portion of the meal, and perhaps a friendly word or two if receiving such from an elf did not make them ill-at-ease.

A pause for a breath of fresh air revealed the presence of a Man in the garden, staring down at a bowl of stew as if it personally were to blame for all the annoyances in the world. He was as tall as an Elf -- taller than some Glorfindel had known -- and wore the brown tunic of a guard in training, as well as a pair of glasses. Definitely not a local boy, then.

Balancing with one bound hand, even while sitting, was quite tiring after a day or two of being dismantled and kicked around by orcs, with complimentary taunts from their master via dreams. Only Ed's stubborn determination to not fall over kept him from doing just that. He wouldn't relax—couldn't relax—until he was untied and whole. Even then, he didn't know if he could release his tension. At least one of the twins had been injured coming to save him, and Ed was sorry for having drawn them into danger.

Remus and Sirius: Another Damn Problem
Padfoot sighed through his nose as he padded up and down the deserted streets of the town. No one had found Remus. They'd all gone. He still didn't feel good about that. But still...without someone watching, Remus had the freedom to treat his wounds
magically. That was a help, but wasn't a substitute for rest or food.

That last was a problem. The fleeing population had taken most of the easily carried supplies with them. Padfoot was hoping to get
lucky and hit a storehouse or something, but he'd had no luck so far. It was looking increasingly like he might have to venture out onto the plains to hunt.

Arthur & Beregond: When Push Comes to Shove
Arthur needed a drink with actual alcohol in it tonight - his usual tea just wasn't going to cut it. He'd been thinking about Denethor's threat to draft him into the guards. Odds are it was a bluff, and if it wasn't, it just wasn't likely to happen. But that didn't stop Arthur from worrying about it. He saw the guards working out in the practice yard, and knew they lived in the barracks, but really didn't know much more than that about life in the guard.

But when Arthur saw Beregond enter the Five Armies, he waved his friend over. Maybe after a few drinks, Beregond might be willing to talk a little more about these things. Just in case. In case Denethor did go completely mad and wanted to outfit his army with British BBC accountants. In which case, Gondor was definitely doomed.

Mutual Taunting
Sauron cast his mind out towards his Orcs, amused to see the boy rendered more or less helpless by the removal of his metal limbs. Better yet, Ed was sleeping, dreaming in fact, and once more he slipped into the boy's mind and watched his nightmares unfold with amusement. "It's a pity it had to come to this, you know." He'd taken fair form again in this dream, stealing the idea from Ed's thoughts - the form of one of the sons of Elrond.

Arthur/Adaneth: Gossip Time!
Adaneth waited all of three minutes once Denethor had left the throne room (gone up to the Tower, no doubt about it) and the guards had taken the stranger back off to the barracks (was he bleeding? She couldn't quite see). Two of which, admittedly, were spent reassuring Cuion, who was cute but a little dumb, and one making sure Denethor really was on his way out and wasn't going to double back. She grabbed her cloak, hitched up her skirts, and fair flew down to the Houses. Unscheduled break from work or not, gossip this good was definitely worth it.

And rumour said Ioreth still had biscuits and the like squirreled away somewhere. Bursting into the Houses, she grabbed the first person she saw. "Where's Ioreth at?"
