2013:Videos

Wikimania 2013 happened at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR between August 7 and August 11. The first two days consisted of a hackathon for software programmers to write code for open knowledge platforms. Main schedule programming featured panels discussing the contributor gender gap alongside the technical architecture of Wikidata. Other sessions examined regional content creation and indigenous knowledge documentation across different Asian languages.
The first day of the conference on August 9 started with an opening ceremony featuring a traditional Chinese dragon dance. Hong Kong Chief Information Officer Daniel Lai delivered the opening keynote address to the attendees. Jimmy Wales presented the traditional State of the Wiki address covering milestones and challenges of the movement. Makoto Okamoto also gave a presentation about relief aid for the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
The second day of the schedule on August 10 featured multiple panels and discussions about the open knowledge platform. Contributors shared updates on regional partnerships and indigenous knowledge projects. Developers met to discuss their tools and workflows for mapping information gaps on the websites. The program included debates on the authority of information and community content planning for regional wikis.
The final day on August 11 continued with additional sessions on collaborative information and decentralized education. Speakers presented academic research regarding participant motivations and cultural differences in volunteer communities. Attendees explored new pathways to promote experimental projects and attract innovators from across the world. The event concluded with a formal closing session summarizing the conference activities.
