Survivors

5.0 out of 5 stars (50)

On a wintry day in St Petersburg, Katya – the Countess Ekaterina Polkonina – gives birth to a baby girl. But outside the cloistered confines of the Polkonin family palace, the Russian Revolution stalks the streets.

All too soon, Katya’s aristocratic world crumbles around her. With her husband Andrey away at the front, she must learn to adapt to protect herself and her two young daughters. As the tumult in Russia spills onto the global stage – and Katya and Andrey’s relationship splinters under the pressure – the Polkonin family find themselves adrift in a rapidly changing world. A world where old ways, old rules and old loves fall away in the face of new dangers, new passions and newfound courage.

This sweeping family saga follows Katya across the world during one of the most turbulent periods in modern history, from the turmoil of the First World War and the Russian Civil War to exile in Manchuria and then China. When Japan enters the Second World War, Katya will once more find herself at the heart of history, in a time of affairs, betrayals and adventures.

I could not not put this book down until I had finished reading it. The Author takes us on a journey from the Russian Revolution in 1917 to the Japanese invasion of China and introduces us to multiple characters who are foes yet friends, how love binds us together, yet separates us in war. and how the main character uses intuition and cleverness to survive and protect others.

    I highly recommend this book.

Of course I am biased. The book was written by my late husband, but don't take my word for it and read Survivors to judge for yourself.

This book is an excellent opportunity to read about a strong woman who overcomes incredible obstacles in the era of post-Bolshivick Russa. I was struck by the interweaving of a great story and the historical events that surrounded that story. This book is a page turner, putting readers right beside the heroine who struggles for herself and her family after fleeing Soviet Russia. A must read!!!

    Beautifully Told and Captivating Story

'Survivors' tells the story of a family's struggle to overcome the dangerous period of the Bolshevik Revolution as well as into WWII. Catherine Meyer succeeds in transforming her late husband, Christopher Meyer's, 'long', unpublished manuscript into a delightful and well-told story of her ancestral Russian family's plight during this challenging period. The story is told in a colouful, fast-paced, 'cinematic' style that makes it difficult for the reader to put down. The background and historical references all ring true to anyone who has closely studied the history of those times. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to any reader who enjoys a briskly-paced, entertaining, and historically accurate recounting of a family's valiant efforts to survive during the cataclysmic upheavals of the first half of the 20th century.

I loved the book, brilliantly written, master of storytelling mixing fact with fiction, but for the reader difficult to separate the two. It gives a synopsis of the turbulent time during the Russian revolution and what the family had to endure escaping Russia, but a very exciting read, a page turner. I strongly recommend this book to all, specially those interested in the history of that time and of resilience against hardship

Survivors is a brilliant, page turning story.

I found Survivors hard to put down.

It's the story of Catherine Meyer's grandparents, which is brilliantly embellished, though very much based on actual events. (Catherine was married to Survivor's author, the late Sir Christopher Meyer.) Her grandparents were escaping aristocrats from the 1917 Russian Revolution.

    They ended up in Manchuria.

However, the Chinese Civil War and the Japanese invasion forced them to flee again to Shanghai. Finally, they arrived in Vietnam. The book has you gripped with tales of officer-murdering soldiers on the German front, her grandparents' fending off an attack in their country house by "Reds", and having to spy against the Japanese for the Chinese Nationalists.

It paints a harrowing picture of what it's like when the rule of law is absent. It's a story of love, betrayal and surviving poverty, ruin and death. I can't recommend Survivors enough.

This was a fantastic read! Excellent characterisations; great attention to detail and very easy to read. I felt transported back in time and have a much better sense of what it would have been like living through the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. Highly Recommended.
