2026 Lexus TX

Overview

The Lexus TX SUV, which is based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, is made for families. It comfortably seats up to seven full-size people, and it comes with plenty of amenities, including heating for the front seats and steering wheel, a kick-under-to-open liftgate, wireless smartphone charging, built-in navigation, and more. We’d expect a little more panache from a Lexus cabin—the materials inside feel more luxurious to the touch than they look—and the interior design is conservative.

Though this isn’t the quickest three-row SUV on the market, the TX is reasonably quiet and well-behaved on the road. Its standard turbocharged four-cylinder doesn’t guzzle fuel, and all-wheel drive is available across the lineup.

The TX350 employs a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that provides modest power (275 ponies) and feels a little undersized for a vehicle this big—but it will nevertheless be enough for most buyers. If you like the TX but are seeking more grunt, consider one of the two TX Hybrid models, which we review separately.

On the road, the TX350 feels less peppy than its hybrid siblings, but its quiet and comfortable ride will likely satisfy luxury-oriented family-car shoppers who will test-drive one.

• C/D 60-mph Test: 7.1 seconds (FWD)

In our testing, the front-wheel-drive TX350 needed 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is about average for this class.

In Comparison: With a 5.7-second time, the TX500h hybrid model is significantly quicker than the nonhybrid. The plug-in TX550h+ is snappier still, shaving a half-second from that time.

Towing and Payload Capacity

• Max Towing: 5000 pounds

In Comparison: The TX’s towing capacity is acceptable but far from class-leading. The Volvo XC90 tops out at 5000 pounds, too, but the Audi Q7 can tug 7000 pounds, and the Lexus GX550 has a 9096-pound rating.

The EPA estimates that the TX350 is good for 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway with front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive models are rated for 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

In Comparison: The front-wheel-drive gas-only TX bested the all-wheel-drive hybrid model in our real-world highway efficiency testing: 31 mpg to 26. (Hybrids of all types generally do much better in city driving than on the highway.)

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: The TX’s cabin is a little underwhelming to look at, but everything up front feels first class. The seats are cushy and heated, and leather upholstery is available. The TX's front seats are comfortable for long drives, and the commanding view out the windshield should satisfy SUV buyers.

Second Row: Depending on the trim level, shoppers have the option to swap the three-person bench for two heated-and-ventilated captain’s chairs. Both setups are comfortable and roomy enough for adults.

Third Row: Though the third row's bottom cushions are positioned close to the floor—like those in many a three-row SUV—the wayback is spacious enough for grown humans. Plus, the seatbacks recline.

Cargo Capacity: The TX has one of the largest cargo areas in the segment, offering 20 cubic feet of space behind the third row. There are also lots of receptacles for small items throughout the cabin. In our testing, we fit five carry-on suitcases behind the TX's third row and 18 with the third row stowed. With both the second and third rows stowed, we fit a total of 38.

Infotainment and Connectivity

We like the 14.0-inch infotainment display in the TX. It’s responsive and fairly intuitive to use, though some settings are buried, and the touch-sensitive steering-wheel buttons are finicky. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard, as are built-in navigation and a wireless smartphone charging pad. A 21-speaker Mark Levinson stereo and a head-up display are available.
