Dragon Ball Z has reclaimed its title as the world's most in-demand legacy series, beating out some of the most popular titles globally, regardless of medium or genre.
Parrot Analytics has revealed that Dragon Ball Z won this year's 6th Annual Global Demand Awards for Most In-Demand Legacy Series of 2023. Dragon Ball Z was the only anime series nominated in this category, beating out many other extremely popular titles, including Mr. Bean, On The Buses, Seinfeld, and Star Trek: The Original Series. Parrot defines a legacy series as one that ended over 20 years ago.
Dragon Ball Z's win represents a return to form for Akira Toriyama's popular anime adaptation. The series previously won the 2021 edition of most in-demand legacy series. Parrot Analytics states that it uses a data-driven algorithm, defining demand as tracking search engine queries, streaming and download data, social media traffic, trailer and clip previews, and even tracking data from illegal anime streaming sites and torrenting data. By attaching undisclosed weights to these categories, "demand" is calculated and titles are ranked accordingly.
Dragon Ball Z and Jujutsu Kaisen Beat Out Even Non-Anime Franchises in 2023
Dragon Ball Z wasn't the only anime success story at this year's Annual Global Demand Awards. Jujutsu Kaisen won the most in-demand TV series in the world this year, similarly showcasing the worldwide appeal of anime as it beat out massive live-action titles like The Last of Us. Dragon Ball's enduring success is something that Akio Iyoku, Toriyama's right-hand man, touched upon as he recently recalled his visit to South America years ago. South America was one of Dragon Ball's largest markets, yet Iyoku felt that the franchise's popularity had waned significantly, prompting serious investment into returning the series to its former glory. Dragon Ball's worldwide reach is set to expand after Crunchyroll announced over 800 episodes across the Dragon Ball franchise will be coming to the United Kingdom and France starting this month.
Crunchyroll streams Dragon Ball Z, which is described: "Goku—the strongest fighter on the planet—is all that stands between humanity and villains from the darkest corners of space. Joined in battle by the Z-Fighters, Goku travels to distant realms in search of the magic powers of the seven Dragon Balls!"
