Australian Politician. He served as the 21st Governor-General of Australia from February 16, 1989 to February 16, 1996. He left school when he was 16 years old and worked as a public servant, then a police officer, while completing an economics degree part-time. In 1961, he was elected to the House of Representatives and later served in various government ministerial posts before becoming the leader of the Labor Party following the party's defeat in the 1977 election. He went on to lead the Labor Party from 1977 to 1983, including a 1980 election defeat. In 1983, he was replaced as party leader by Bob Hawke and after the Labor victory in that year's election, he became the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade in the new Hawke government. He served in this position until 1988 and a year later, was named the Governor-General of Australia. His tenure as Governor-General lasted seven years until he stepped down in 1996. After his tenure, he continued to contribute to political discussions in Australia up until his passing.
