During his presidency, he achieved a dramatic fall in poverty rates inherited after the 2001 crisis due to the creation of millions of jobs and food aid to poorer families. After his presidency, he briefly served as Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and as a National Congressman. From 2007 until his death, served as First Gentleman of Argentina during his wife, Cristina's term as President of Argentina. He was first man to serve in this position. He died of a sudden heart attack and was given a state funeral.

His remains were moved from the original burial site within the same cemetery to the mausoleum, which was followed with an inauguration on October 27, 2011.
