A rectangle is a four-sided (quadrilateral) shape

  • The area of a rectangle is the measure of the region enclosed within its four sides.
  • The perimeter of a rectangle is the total length of its boundary.

Some of the solved examples on area

Q1: What is the length of the rectangle given that the area of the rectangle is 150 square units and the breadth of the rectangle is 30 units?

Area of rectangle = 150 sq. units

Breadth of rectangle = 30 units

Length of rectangle = Area/Breadth

Length of rectangle = 150/30 = 5 units

Length of the given rectangle is 5 units.

Q2: Determine the breadth of the rectangle given that the length of the rectangle is 22 units and the area of the rectangle is 880 square units.

Area of rectangle = 880 sq. units

Length of rectangle = 22 units

Breadth of the given rectangle = Area/ Length = 880/22 = 40 units.

Q3: A rectangular piece of land has dimensions 40 meters by 30 meters. Determine the area of the land.

For given rectangular piece of land:

length (l) = 40 mts.

breadth (b) = 30 mts.

Area of given rectangular piece of land = l × b = 40 × 30 = 1200 sq. mts.

Q4: A rectangular swimming pool measures 20 meters by 12 meters. What is the area of the pool?

For given rectangular swimming pool:

length (l) = 20 mts.

breadth (b) = 12 mts.

Area of given rectangle swimming pool = l × b = 20 × 12 = 240 sq. meters.

Q5: The perimeter of a rectangular garden is 300 m. If its length is 110 m, find the breadth of the garden.

Perimeter of garden = 300 m
Length of garden = 110 m
Breadth of garden = ?

Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (Length + Breadth)

300 = 2 (110 + Breadth)

300 ÷ 2 = 110 + Breadth
150 = 110 + Breadth

Breadth = 150 − 110
Breadth = 40 m

Q6: A rectangular plot has an area of 480 m² and a length of 24 m. Find its breadth and perimeter.

Area of rectangle = 480 m²
Length of rectangle = 24 m

Breadth of rectangle = Area ÷ Length
Breadth = 480 ÷ 24
Breadth = 20 m

Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (Length + Breadth)
Perimeter = 2 (24 + 20)
Perimeter = 2 × 44
Perimeter = 88 m

Practice Problems

Q1. What is the length of the rectangle given that the area of the rectangle is 150 square units and the breadth of the rectangle is 30 units?

Q2. A rectangle has a length of 10 units and a width of 6 units. What is its area?

Q3. The length of a rectangle is twice its breadth. If the perimeter is 96 cm, find the length and breadth of the rectangle.

Q4. The perimeter of a rectangle is increased from 100 m to 150 m by increasing both its length and breadth by the same amount. Find the increase in each dimension.
